Ses \u0153uvres nous font r\u00e9fl\u00e9chir \u00e0 la perte \u2013 tant de personnes ont perdu la vie \u2013 et nous rappellent qu'il y a bien plus que les faits d'une bataille particuli\u00e8re. Il y a eu d'\u00e9normes sacrifices sur le plan personnel. \u00bb<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:false,&quot;134233118&quot;:false,&quot;335559738&quot;:240,&quot;335559739&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\" translation-block\">L'ancien directeur du mus\u00e9e, aujourd'hui directeur \u00e9m\u00e9rite, Richard Sanderson, a mis en lumi\u00e8re certaines des histoires qui se cachent derri\u00e8re les \u0153uvres d'art lors de son discours \u00e0 la r\u00e9ception d'ouverture de l'exposition. Citons par exemple l'origine de Trawlers off Halifax Harbour, une lithographie d'Arthur Lismer, membre du c\u00e9l\u00e8bre Groupe des Sept. L'\u0153uvre repr\u00e9sente des chalutiers de classe Castle peints d'un camouflage \u00e9clatant. \u00c0 l'\u00e9poque, Lismer \u00e9tait directeur de l'\u00c9cole d'art et de design de Victoria (aujourd'hui le Coll\u00e8ge d'art et de design de la Nouvelle-\u00c9cosse) et \u00e9tait fascin\u00e9 par ces navires aux couleurs vives. D\u00e9termin\u00e9 \u00e0 les dessiner, il s\u2019est plusieurs fois heurt\u00e9 aux restrictions de la s\u00e9curit\u00e9 portuaire. Finalement, il a \u00e9crit \u00e0 la National Gallery pour demander de l'aide. Eric Brown, alors directeur de la galerie et figure cl\u00e9 du Comit\u00e9 consultatif des artistes de guerre canadiens, lui r\u00e9pondit en nommant Lismer artiste de guerre officiel pendant la Premi\u00e8re Guerre mondiale. Lismer a ensuite r\u00e9alis\u00e9 plusieurs \u0153uvres inspir\u00e9es par la guerre.<\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00ab Chacune de ces pi\u00e8ces raconte une histoire, et il y a toujours une histoire derri\u00e8re l'histoire \u00bb, a d\u00e9clar\u00e9 Sanderson.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:false,&quot;134233118&quot;:false,&quot;335559738&quot;:240,&quot;335559739&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">La s\u00e9lection des \u0153uvres expos\u00e9es parmi les plus de 300 \u0153uvres d'art de la collection du mus\u00e9e a pris plusieurs mois. Il a fallu d\u00e9baller les objets entrepos\u00e9s afin de d\u00e9terminer ceux qui correspondaient aux th\u00e8mes g\u00e9n\u00e9raux et ceux qui pouvaient mat\u00e9riellement s\u2019int\u00e9grer dans l'espace disponible au deuxi\u00e8me \u00e9tage du mus\u00e9e. L'objectif \u00e9tait de pr\u00e9senter une histoire chronologique de la Marine royale canadienne tout en mettant en valeur une vari\u00e9t\u00e9 de m\u00e9dias artistiques. L'exposition comprend des aquarelles, des peintures \u00e0 l'huile, des croquis au fusain, des lithographies, des photographies et bien plus encore.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:false,&quot;134233118&quot;:false,&quot;335559738&quot;:240,&quot;335559739&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00ab Nous avons tellement d'\u0153uvres d'art dans notre collection que nous aurions facilement pu doubler la taille de l'exposition. Il n'a donc pas \u00e9t\u00e9 facile de faire un choix \u00bb, a d\u00e9clar\u00e9 Sanderson en jetant un coup d'\u0153il autour de la galerie. \u00ab J'aurais aim\u00e9 que l'exposition occupe tout l'espace, du sol au plafond, mais on m'a rappel\u00e9 que ce n'\u00e9tait tout simplement pas possible. Il l'a achet\u00e9e pour quelques centimes. \u00bb Le personnel du mus\u00e9e pense que la carte postale a pu arriver en Alabama pendant la guerre de S\u00e9cession, lorsque Halifax \u00e9tait consid\u00e9r\u00e9e comme un territoire neutre et accueillait de nombreux visiteurs conf\u00e9d\u00e9r\u00e9s.<\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00ab Les cartes postales de ce type \u00e9taient imprim\u00e9es pour aider les gens \u00e0 s'orienter dans la ville \u00bb, explique Gamble. \u00ab L\u2019\u00c9difice de l'Amiraut\u00e9 \u00e9tait sans doute un point de rep\u00e8re important dans les ann\u00e9es 1860, nous pensons donc qu'elle a pu \u00eatre utilis\u00e9e par un visiteur conf\u00e9d\u00e9r\u00e9 qui l'a rapport\u00e9e chez lui.
