Le NCSM Charlottetown re\u00e7oit l'honneur de guerre pour son d\u00e9ploiement en Libye en 2011<\/h3>\n

\u00c0 la fin de l'\u00e9t\u00e9 2011, le Navire canadien de Sa Majest\u00e9 (NCSM) Charlottetown a mis le cap sur la Libye, d\u00e9chir\u00e9e par la guerre civile. \n\nL\u00e0-bas, l'\u00e9quipage a d\u00fb faire face \u00e0 des tirs d'artillerie, des roquettes et des mines alors qu\u2019il se battait pour prot\u00e9ger la ville assi\u00e9g\u00e9e de Misrata et faire respecter l\u2019embargo sur les armes ainsi que la zone d\u2019exclusion a\u00e9rienne d\u00e9cr\u00e9t\u00e9s par l\u2019Organisation des Nations Unies (ONU). Aujourd\u2019hui, leurs efforts sont inscrits dans l\u2019histoire du navire gr\u00e2ce au nouvel honneur de guerre \u00ab LIBYA \u00bb.<\/p>\n

Le vice-amiral Angus Topshee, commandant de la MRC, a d\u00e9crit l'importance de la remise de l'honneur de guerre. Le d\u00e9ploiement de 2011 a marqu\u00e9 la premi\u00e8re fois qu'un navire de guerre canadien faisait face \u00e0 des tirs hostiles en mer depuis la guerre de Cor\u00e9e.

Une c\u00e9r\u00e9monie de remise a eu lieu \u00e0 Halifax le 20 juin dans le cadre de la Semaine internationale de la flotte de Halifax. Le NCSM Charlottetown et son \u00e9quipage \u00e9taient amarr\u00e9s au quai 20 alors que des officiers sup\u00e9rieurs de la Marine, des dignitaires et d\u2019anciens membres d\u2019\u00e9quipage se sont rassembl\u00e9s pour comm\u00e9morer les actions du navire en Libye.<\/p>\n

\u00ab Il s\u2019agit d\u2019une c\u00e9r\u00e9monie importante et rare \u00bb, a d\u00e9clar\u00e9 le vice-amiral (Vam) Angus Topshee, commandant de la Marine royale du Canada (MRC).<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00ab Nous sommes r\u00e9unis ici pour comm\u00e9morer le troisi\u00e8me chapitre de l\u2019histoire du Charlottetown. Une histoire de devoir, de bravoure et de volont\u00e9 de tout risquer au service du roi et du pays. \u00bb<\/p>\n

Les honneurs de guerre constituent une reconnaissance publique et un t\u00e9moignage historique de la participation active d\u2019une unit\u00e9 de combat \u00e0 des op\u00e9rations contre une force ennemie arm\u00e9e. Il s\u2019agit du troisi\u00e8me honneur de guerre du NCSM Charlottetown. Les deux pr\u00e9c\u00e9dents ont \u00e9t\u00e9 d\u00e9cern\u00e9s pour des combats men\u00e9s pendant la Seconde Guerre mondiale par des navires ant\u00e9rieurs portant le nom de Charlottetown.<\/p>\n

Le commodore (\u00e0 la retraite) Craig Skjerpen \u00e9tait le commandant du Charlottetown pendant le d\u00e9ploiement en Libye en 2011. S\u2019adressant \u00e0 ses amis et anciens coll\u00e8gues sur le quai, il a racont\u00e9 les actions du navire pendant les six mois qu\u2019a dur\u00e9 l\u2019op\u00e9ration Mobile.<\/p>\n

La situation en Libye exigeait une r\u00e9ponse imm\u00e9diate, ce qui signifiait qu\u2019il y avait tr\u00e8s peu de temps pour se pr\u00e9parer.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00ab Le samedi 26 f\u00e9vrier, la r\u00e9solution de l\u2019ONU sur la Libye a \u00e9t\u00e9 adopt\u00e9e. Le dimanche, on m\u2019a demand\u00e9 dans quel d\u00e9lai nous pouvions lever l\u2019ancre. J\u2019ai r\u00e9pondu trois jours \u00bb, se souvient-il.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Gr\u00e2ce aux efforts consid\u00e9rables de l\u2019\u00e9quipage et \u00e0 l\u2019aide de toute la flotte de l\u2019Atlantique, le NCSM Charlottetown a pris la mer le 2 mars 2011. Il allait jouer un r\u00f4le essentiel dans la d\u00e9fense de la ville portuaire libyenne de Misrata, assi\u00e9g\u00e9e par les forces du r\u00e9gime de Kadhafi. Le port de la ville \u00e9tait le seul moyen d\u2019acheminer l\u2019aide humanitaire \u00e0 la population de Misrata. Le navire a contribu\u00e9 \u00e0 maintenir cette ligne de vie ouverte.<\/p>\n

Il a prot\u00e9g\u00e9 les dragueurs de mines alli\u00e9s pendant qu\u2019ils d\u00e9minaient le port de Misrata, a repouss\u00e9 les navires ennemis et a aid\u00e9 \u00e0 coordonner les actions contre les forces de Kadhafi qui encerclaient la ville.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00c0 une occasion, le Charlottetown a coordonn\u00e9 des frappes a\u00e9riennes avec un escadron de chasseurs CF-18 de l\u2019Aviation royale canadienne stationn\u00e9s en Italie. L\u2019attaque a d\u00e9truit plusieurs pi\u00e8ces d\u2019artillerie qui visaient la ville.<\/p>\n

Cette \u00ab intervention enti\u00e8rement canadienne \u00bb \u00e9tait une source de fiert\u00e9 pour l\u2019\u00e9quipage, a d\u00e9clar\u00e9 le Cmdre (\u00e0 la retraite) Skjerpen.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Le Charlottetown a souvent \u00e9t\u00e9 en danger pendant son d\u00e9ploiement et a \u00e9t\u00e9 pris sous le feu \u00e0 plusieurs reprises par l\u2019artillerie c\u00f4ti\u00e8re et des armes l\u00e9g\u00e8res. Il a \u00e9galement \u00e9t\u00e9 la cible d\u2019une attaque \u00e0 la roquette qui n\u2019a pas atteint le navire.<\/p>\n

Le Cmdre (\u00e0 la retraite) Skjerpen a d\u00e9clar\u00e9 que lui et son \u00e9quipe devaient constamment rester \u00e0 l\u2019aff\u00fbt de menaces potentielles.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00ab Le stress faisait partie de notre quotidien. \u00bb<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Malgr\u00e9 les dangers, le NCSM Charlottetown a men\u00e9 \u00e0 bien sa mission sans subir de dommages ni de pertes et est rentr\u00e9 au Canada le 2 septembre 2011.<\/p>\n

Le Vam Topshee a d\u00e9crit l\u2019honneur de guerre remport\u00e9 par le Charlottetown comme repr\u00e9sentant la raison d\u2019\u00eatre militaire de la MRC d\u2019une mani\u00e8re que d\u2019autres distinctions ne peuvent \u00e9galer.<\/p>\n

\u00ab C\u2019est cela, la Marine \u00bb, a-t-il d\u00e9clar\u00e9.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00ab La violence contre les ennemis du Canada, mais uniquement lorsque cela est n\u00e9cessaire. \u00bb<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Apr\u00e8s la c\u00e9r\u00e9monie, les participants ont \u00e9t\u00e9 accueillis \u00e0 bord du pont d\u2019envol du navire pour une r\u00e9ception.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

L\u2019\u00e9quipage actuel du NCSM Charlottetown, qui vient de participer \u00e0 l\u2019exercice Cutlass Fury 2025, se pr\u00e9pare \u00e0 un futur d\u00e9ploiement dans la r\u00e9gion indo-pacifique dans le cadre de l\u2019op\u00e9ration Horizon.<\/p>\n
