Ce qui n'\u00e9tait au d\u00e9part qu'une tradition de vacances dans l'enfance est devenu une comp\u00e9tition de haut niveau pour Noel Redmond, sp\u00e9cialiste de l'exercice physique des Programmes de soutien du personnel (PSP), qui s'est lanc\u00e9 dans l'un des plus anciens jeux de soci\u00e9t\u00e9 du Canada.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Redmond est un expert du crokinole. Il a particip\u00e9 aux 23e championnats du monde de crokinole en 2024 et se pr\u00e9pare \u00e0 y participer \u00e0 nouveau en 2025.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Il a d\u00e9couvert ce jeu pendant les f\u00eates de No\u00ebl de sa jeunesse. Sa famille poss\u00e9dait un plateau de crokinole qu'elle sortait chaque ann\u00e9e pendant les vacances. Il jouait des matchs contre ses amis et sa famille en visite pendant les vacances, puis le plateau \u00e9tait rang\u00e9 jusqu'en d\u00e9cembre suivant.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Le crokinole est un jeu de soci\u00e9t\u00e9 canadien bas\u00e9 sur la dext\u00e9rit\u00e9 o\u00f9 les joueurs font rouler de petits disques sur un plateau circulaire, en visant les zones \u00e0 haut score tout en faisant tomber les pi\u00e8ces de leurs adversaires.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Redmond dit qu'il ne se souvient pas avoir \u00e9t\u00e9 un bon joueur de crokinole dans son enfance, mais qu'il a fini par prendre plaisir \u00e0 s'entra\u00eener seul. Il organisait des parties en solo et des d\u00e9fis pour tester ses comp\u00e9tences.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00ab J'ai vraiment commenc\u00e9 \u00e0 aimer m'entra\u00eener, juste \u00e0 tirer sur les autres disques du plateau, m\u00eame s'il n'y avait personne d'autre pour jouer... Je pense que c'est parce que j'aimais \u00e7a que j'ai appris les angles et ce qui se passait quand on frappait un poteau \u00e0 un certain angle. \u00bb<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Malgr\u00e9 son appr\u00e9ciation croissante pour le jeu, le crokinole restait quelque chose qu'il ne jouait que pendant les vacances. Il avait d\u00e9j\u00e0 cherch\u00e9 des groupes locaux de crokinole, mais n'avait trouv\u00e9 que peu d'int\u00e9r\u00eat en dehors d'un groupe de l'\u00cele-du-Prince-\u00c9douard. Il a continu\u00e9 \u00e0 s'entra\u00eener et \u00e0 jouer lorsque l'occasion se pr\u00e9sentait, mais pendant de nombreuses ann\u00e9es, sa participation s'est arr\u00eat\u00e9e l\u00e0.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Le lendemain de No\u00ebl 2023, Redmond a de nouveau cherch\u00e9 des clubs de crokinole en Nouvelle-\u00c9cosse et a trouv\u00e9 un groupe qui jouait une fois par mois \u00e0 Wolfville. Il s'est joint \u00e0 leur rencontre de janvier et, pour la premi\u00e8re fois, a rencontr\u00e9 des adversaires comp\u00e9titifs pour tester ses comp\u00e9tences. Il dit que jouer toute l'ann\u00e9e a aiguis\u00e9 ses capacit\u00e9s et l'a rendu plus passionn\u00e9 par le jeu.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

En juin 2024, six mois seulement apr\u00e8s avoir commenc\u00e9 \u00e0 jouer en comp\u00e9tition, Redmond s'est rendu \u00e0 Tavistock, en Ontario, pour les championnats du monde de crokinole. L'\u00e9v\u00e9nement a attir\u00e9 plus de 200 joueurs du Canada, des \u00c9tats-Unis, de Su\u00e8de et du Japon.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Redmond s'est surpris lui-m\u00eame en terminant en beaut\u00e9 dans la cat\u00e9gorie des simples en comp\u00e9tition.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00ab Six mois apr\u00e8s avoir commenc\u00e9 \u00e0 jouer de mani\u00e8re plus comp\u00e9titive, j'ai particip\u00e9 au championnat du monde et j'ai termin\u00e9 13e dans la cat\u00e9gorie des simples comp\u00e9titives. Donc, je vais probablement continuer \u00e0 jouer toute ma vie \u00bb, a-t-il d\u00e9clar\u00e9. Pour l'avenir, il pr\u00e9voit de participer \u00e0 nouveau au championnat du monde de crokinole en juin, o\u00f9 son objectif est de se classer parmi les dix premiers. Il se pr\u00e9pare \u00e9galement \u00e0 un \u00e9ventuel tournoi national pr\u00e9vu \u00e0 Wolfville en 2026.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Gr\u00e2ce \u00e0 ce sport, Redmond a nou\u00e9 des liens avec les meilleurs joueurs et passionn\u00e9s du monde entier. Il a m\u00eame rencontr\u00e9 la famille \u00e0 l'origine de Tracey Boards, fabricant des planches et accessoires haut de gamme utilis\u00e9s lors des championnats du monde.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Il affirme que le crokinole se d\u00e9veloppe en Nouvelle-\u00c9cosse et pense qu'un club verra le jour \u00e0 Halifax dans le futur.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Bien qu'il participe d\u00e9sormais \u00e0 des comp\u00e9titions de haut niveau, Redmond pr\u00e9voit de maintenir la tradition de No\u00ebl de son enfance qui consiste \u00e0 jouer au crokinole en famille.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
