Apr\u00e8s avoir \u00e9t\u00e9 les yeux et les oreilles de l'OTAN pendant six mois au cours d'une p\u00e9riode de tension en M\u00e9diterran\u00e9e orientale, le Navire canadien de Sa Majest\u00e9 (NCSM) Charlottetown est rentr\u00e9 \u00e0 Halifax le 20 d\u00e9cembre.<\/p>\n

D\u00e9ploy\u00e9 en tant que navire amiral du 2e groupe de la Force navale permanente de l'OTAN (SNMG2), l'\u00e9quipage du Charlottetown avait pour mission de surveiller les mouvements des navires non alli\u00e9s, principalement ceux de la F\u00e9d\u00e9ration de Russie, dans la r\u00e9gion. Il a \u00e9galement surveill\u00e9 des navires civils soup\u00e7onn\u00e9s d'\u00eatre impliqu\u00e9s dans des activit\u00e9s commerciales ill\u00e9gales visant \u00e0 contourner les sanctions internationales.<\/p>\n

Le capitaine de fr\u00e9gate (Capf) Nicholas Buxton, commandant du Charlottetown , a d\u00e9clar\u00e9 qu'ils avaient observ\u00e9 des navires russes se rendant \u00e0 Tartous, en Syrie, et en revenant, et qu'ils avaient surveill\u00e9 avec succ\u00e8s plusieurs navires lors d'un exercice naval russe.<\/p>\n

\u00ab Le Charlottetown, avec d'autres unit\u00e9s, a particip\u00e9 \u00e0 une p\u00e9riode renforc\u00e9e d'activit\u00e9s de vigilance en septembre, qui a co\u00efncid\u00e9 avec l'Okean 24 de la marine de la F\u00e9d\u00e9ration de Russie, un exercice \u00e0 grande \u00e9chelle qui s'est d\u00e9roul\u00e9 simultan\u00e9ment sur les th\u00e9\u00e2tres de la Baltique, de la M\u00e9diterran\u00e9e et du Pacifique \u00bb, a d\u00e9clar\u00e9 le Capf Buxton.<\/p>\n

\u00ab Pour nous, il s'agissait de surveiller trois navires de guerre de la F\u00e9d\u00e9ration de Russie et un sous-marin de classe Kilo. Cette p\u00e9riode unique pass\u00e9e seul avec des moyens russes a \u00e9t\u00e9 une source particuli\u00e8re de fiert\u00e9 pour l'\u00e9quipage. \u00bb<\/p>\n

Le r\u00f4le du Charlottetown au sein du SNMG2 s'inscrivait dans le cadre de l'op\u00e9ration Reassurance en cours au Canada, par laquelle les forces arm\u00e9es canadiennes contribuent \u00e0 la d\u00e9fense collective de l'OTAN en Europe centrale et orientale.<\/p>\n

Dans l'exercice de ses fonctions, l'\u00e9quipage du navire a d\u00fb r\u00e9agir rapidement \u00e0 des \u00e9v\u00e9nements mondiaux majeurs, notamment les op\u00e9rations militaires isra\u00e9liennes \u00e0 Gaza, au Liban et la chute du r\u00e9gime de Bashar al-Assad en Syrie. <\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Ces changements rapides dans la r\u00e9gion ont oblig\u00e9 le Charlottetown et ses partenaires du SNMG2 \u00e0 modifier les plans existants et \u00e0 \u00e9laborer de nouvelles mesures d'urgence. L'une d'entre elles aurait consist\u00e9 \u00e0 aider le navire \u00e0 \u00e9vacuer les citoyens canadiens du Liban en cas de besoin.<\/p>\n

\u00ab Parfois, un changement de plan se produit et le d\u00e9lai d'ex\u00e9cution est tr\u00e8s court \u00bb, explique le lieutenant de vaisseau (Ltv) Sebastian Savard, qui sert comme officier des syst\u00e8mes de communication et d'information \u00e0 bord du Charlottetown. Il a ajout\u00e9 que \u00ab nous devions ex\u00e9cuter un plan en quelques heures ou moins, alors que d'habitude nous avons des jours, des semaines ou des mois pour nous pr\u00e9parer. \u00bb<\/p>\n

Le Capf Buxton a salu\u00e9 la capacit\u00e9 de l'\u00e9quipage \u00e0 faire face aux \u00ab exigences extraordinaires \u00bb du d\u00e9ploiement et \u00e0 la pression suppl\u00e9mentaire que repr\u00e9sente le r\u00f4le de navire amiral du SNMG2. Charlottetown a accueilli le Commodore (Cmdre) Matthew Coates, qui a command\u00e9 le SNMG2 du 1er juillet au 3 d\u00e9cembre, ainsi que son \u00e9tat-major.<\/p>\n

\u00ab C'est toujours une exp\u00e9rience diff\u00e9rente que d'\u00eatre le navire amiral \u00bb, a d\u00e9clar\u00e9 le capitaine de fr\u00e9gate Buxton. \u00ab Notre mission \u00e0 Charlottetown \u00e9tait de tout faire pour permettre au Cmdre Coates de r\u00e9ussir. \u00bb<\/p>\n

Il a d\u00e9clar\u00e9 que l'\u00e9quipage du navire \u00e9tait \u00ab tr\u00e8s fier \u00bb de servir de navire amiral, ajoutant que pour de nombreux marins \u00e0 bord, il s'agissait d'une \u00ab occasion unique. \u00bb\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

La complexit\u00e9 et l'ampleur du d\u00e9ploiement ont permis \u00e0 l'\u00e9quipage du Charlottetown de mettre en pratique des ann\u00e9es d'entra\u00eenement.<\/p>\n

La ma\u00eetre de 2e classe (M 2) River Leggat, communicatrice navale et superviseuse de veille pour le groupe de contr\u00f4le des communications du Charlottetown, a d\u00e9clar\u00e9 que son \u00e9quipe s'est surpass\u00e9e dans toutes les t\u00e2ches qui lui ont \u00e9t\u00e9 confi\u00e9es.<\/p>\n

\u00ab Nous avons effectu\u00e9 un exercice majeur en septembre et c'\u00e9tait la premi\u00e8re fois qu'une grande partie de mon \u00e9quipe \u00e9tait confront\u00e9e \u00e0 des quarts de travail multiples, au travail sur la passerelle et \u00e0 la gestion des signaux. Nombre d'entre eux se sont montr\u00e9s \u00e0 la hauteur, au-del\u00e0 m\u00eame de leur grade... C'\u00e9tait vraiment bien de voir toute notre formation se concr\u00e9tiser. \u00bb<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Le Charlottetown est rentr\u00e9 \u00e0 Halifax juste \u00e0 temps pour les f\u00eates, ce qui a permis \u00e0 l'\u00e9quipage de se reposer et de se ressourcer. La M 2 Leggat a d\u00e9clar\u00e9 qu'elle avait h\u00e2te de se d\u00e9tendre et de profiter des plaisirs simples.<\/p>\n
