Cela faisait plusieurs ann\u00e9es depuis notre derni\u00e8re rencontre, et c\u2019est le genre de choses qui arrive souvent dans la vie des marins. On tisse des liens \u00e0 travers les \u00e9quipages et au fil du temps, puis on s\u2019\u00e9loigne et se retrouve au gr\u00e9 des mar\u00e9es.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

C'est avec surprise que j'ai rencontr\u00e9 le matelot-chef St\u00e9phane Guay lors d'une c\u00e9r\u00e9monie au cours de laquelle il a re\u00e7u la troisi\u00e8me agrafe de sa d\u00e9coration des Forces canadiennes. Un moment rare, car peu de camarades d\u2019armes peuvent se vanter d\u2019avoir cumul\u00e9 autant de miles marins et d\u2019exp\u00e9riences au sein de notre organisation.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Je l'admets, j'\u00e9tais impressionn\u00e9. Plus notre carri\u00e8re avance, plus nous r\u00e9alisons les efforts et les sacrifices que cela implique. Apr\u00e8s la c\u00e9r\u00e9monie, j\u2019ai eu le privil\u00e8ge de discuter avec le Matc Guay au Mess de SFC Leitrim, j\u2019\u00e9tais curieux d\u2019en apprendre davantage sur son parcours.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Voici quelques extraits de notre enrichissante conversation.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Quelle ann\u00e9e as-tu rejoint les FAC, St\u00e9phane?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

J'ai int\u00e9gr\u00e9 la r\u00e9serve navale le 29 juin 1981, au NCSM Montcalm \u00e0 Qu\u00e9bec, en tant que traceur radariste. En 1984, ce m\u00e9tier a \u00e9t\u00e9 rebaptis\u00e9 NCIOP. N'\u00e9tant pas vraiment passionn\u00e9 par le m\u00e9tier, j'ai chang\u00e9 pour celui de man\u0153uvrier en 1986. \u00c0 cette \u00e9poque, je faisais partie de la r\u00e9serve pour financer mes \u00e9tudes et vivre des aventures maritimes chaque \u00e9t\u00e9. Cela m\u2019a permis d\u2019\u00e9tudier l\u2019Histoire, la G\u00e9ographie et l\u2019Enseignement \u00e0 l\u2019universit\u00e9.<\/p>\n

As-tu connu les ann\u00e9es des \u00ab gate vessels \u00bb ?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

J\u2019ai pass\u00e9 plusieurs \u00e9t\u00e9s \u00e0 Halifax sur diff\u00e9rentes classes de navires, notamment le Porte St-Jean et le Porte St-Louis, l\u2019Anticosti, le Rallye et le Rapid, ainsi que le Nipigon et l\u2019Algonquin. J\u2019ai eu l'occasion de visiter de nombreux ports du Nouveau-Brunswick et de la Nouvelle-\u00c9cosse, ainsi que de naviguer le long de la c\u00f4te est am\u00e9ricaine. J'ai m\u00eame explor\u00e9 la c\u00f4te ouest sur des navires comme le Porte de la Reine et le Porte Dauphine; de pr\u00e9cieux souvenirs.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

As-tu des anecdotes sal\u00e9es et m\u00e9morables?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Haha, il y en a effectivement quelques-unes ! Je me souviens d'un \u00e9t\u00e9 en tant que bosco (buffer) sur le Porte St-Louis et le St-Jean, o\u00f9 notre commandant \u00e9tait particuli\u00e8rement discret, pr\u00e9f\u00e9rant rester dans sa cabine en mer. Mais, quand on passait pr\u00e8s de la porte de sa cabine, des bruits \u00e9tranges laissaient deviner que personne n\u2019est \u00e0 l\u2019abri du mal de mer !<\/p>\n

Quels ont \u00e9t\u00e9 tes moments forts en service?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Enseigner aux recrues et dispenser des formations de premiers secours. Au fil des ann\u00e9es, j\u2019ai eu l\u2019opportunit\u00e9 d\u2019enseigner et de former plusieurs membres au secourisme, former \u00e9galement les instructeurs et m\u00eame les ma\u00eetre-instructeurs. Mon implication dans les premiers soins m\u2019a permis d'\u00eatre admis au sein de l'Ordre de Saint-Jean. En d\u00e9cembre 2022, j'ai eu l'honneur de recevoir une Mention \u00e9logieuse de l'Ordre de Saint-Jean, remise par le m\u00e9decin g\u00e9n\u00e9ral le MGen Marc Bilodeau.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

En 1992, j'ai eu l'honneur de faire partie de la premi\u00e8re \u00e9dition de la Compagnie Franche de la Marine, o\u00f9 j'\u00e9tais responsable de la s\u00e9curit\u00e9, du transport et d'autres t\u00e2ches connexes. C'\u00e9tait intense, mais tellement gratifiant de pouvoir participer \u00e0 ces \u00e9v\u00e9nements o\u00f9 les marins arboraient les uniformes d'\u00e9poque et donnaient des spectacles pour rencontrer le public. Apr\u00e8s avoir \u00e9t\u00e9 instructeur pour trois cours de recrues, j'ai bri\u00e8vement \u00e9t\u00e9 en 1994 \u00e0 l\u2019ERFC St-Jean, avant d'avoir l'opportunit\u00e9 de naviguer dans les Cara\u00efbes, une p\u00e9riode inoubliable !\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

D\u2019autres moments marquants : j\u2019ai \u0153uvr\u00e9 aux normes pour l'\u00e9cole des recrues \u00e0 la CFB Borden, j'ai enseign\u00e9 les premiers soins, ainsi que le CBRN.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Au cours de ma carri\u00e8re, j\u2019ai \u00e9t\u00e9 instructeur pour 13 pelotons de recrues, dont deux \u00e0 titre de commandant de peloton. J\u2019ai \u00e9galement \u00e9t\u00e9 instructeur pour 13 cours de PLQ et 3 cours de ILQ. Ma derni\u00e8re position dans la r\u00e9serve navale a \u00e9t\u00e9 gestionnaire de carri\u00e8re pour le BTL, o\u00f9 j'ai g\u00e9r\u00e9 la carri\u00e8re de plus de 1000 membres.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Sur 43 ann\u00e9es de service, on peut dire qu\u2019il y a eu beaucoup d\u2019eau qui a coul\u00e9 sous les ponts !\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Quels ont \u00e9t\u00e9 les moments les plus difficiles de ton parcours?\u00a0<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Le d\u00e9m\u00e9nagement de ma famille \u00e0 Kingston pendant ma formation \u00e0 Borden, co\u00efncidant avec le d\u00e9c\u00e8s de mon p\u00e8re. Ca \u00e9t\u00e9 une p\u00e9riode particuli\u00e8rement \u00e9prouvante. J'ai \u00e9galement d\u00fb faire face \u00e0 des d\u00e9fis en tant que francophone \u00e9voluant dans un milieu majoritairement anglophone.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Qu\u2019est-ce qui t\u2019a pouss\u00e9 vers ton m\u00e9tier actuel ?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Apr\u00e8s 28 ans dans la r\u00e9serve navale, j'ai choisi de transf\u00e9rer vers la Force r\u00e9guli\u00e8re. J'ai pass\u00e9 deux ans en tant qu'officier de l\u2019entra\u00eenement (TDO), et en 2013, j'ai transf\u00e9r\u00e9 sp\u00e9cialiste SIGINT (renseignement d'origine \u00e9lectromagn\u00e9tique). Dans ce m\u00e9tier, j'ai eu l'opportunit\u00e9 de d\u00e9ployer en Europe dans le cadre de l'op\u00e9ration R\u00e9assurance \u00e0 bord du NCSM Charlottetown. Six mois en mer et sur le vieux continent!<\/p>\n

Si ma m\u00e9moire est bonne, tu as lanc\u00e9 ta propre entreprise de montage de m\u00e9dailles \u00e0 travers tout \u00e7a, n\u2019est-ce pas?\u00a0<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Mon entreprise s'appelle \u00ab Sailor Court Mount Medals \u00bb. J'ai commenc\u00e9 \u00e0 monter des m\u00e9dailles lorsque le tailleur de la base a cess\u00e9 de le faire. Les membres de mon unit\u00e9 cherchaient un endroit pour faire le montage de leurs m\u00e9dailles. J'ai commenc\u00e9 avec un montage simple de quatre m\u00e9dailles. Apr\u00e8s quelques essais qui ne me satisfaisaient pas, j'ai finalement r\u00e9ussi \u00e0 atteindre ce que je voulais. Depuis, j'ai beaucoup appris en d\u00e9montant et remontant. \u00c7a fait maintenant plus de 20 ans que j\u2019ai le privil\u00e8ge de faire \u00e7a pour les membres de la r\u00e9guli\u00e8re, de la R\u00e9serve, Cadets et m\u00eame les v\u00e9t\u00e9rans et la GRC.<\/span><\/p>\n

Navires canadiens de Sa Majest\u00e9<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

La derni\u00e8re question que j\u2019ai pos\u00e9e \u00e0 St\u00e9phane concernait les navires sur lesquels il a navigu\u00e9. \n\nSt\u00e9phane a fait partie des \u00e9quipages du: NCSM Nipigon, PLB Captor, NCSM Porte St-Louis, NCSM Porte St-Jean, NCSM Porte Dauphine, NCSM Porte de la Reine, NCSM Porte Qu\u00e9bec, NCSM Rally, NCSM Rapid, NCSM Anticosti, NCSM Algonquin, NCSM Pr\u00e9server, et NCSM Charlottetown.<\/p>\n

En conclusion, je dois reconna\u00eetre que j\u2019\u00e9tais d\u00e9j\u00e0 impressionn\u00e9 par le CD3, mais apr\u00e8s notre conversation, j\u2019appr\u00e9cie encore plus l\u2019engagement, le courage et la r\u00e9silience dont St\u00e9phane a fait preuve au fil des ans.<\/span><\/p>\n
