Les membres de la \u00ab famille \u00bb du Navire canadien de Sa Majest\u00e9 (NCSM) Kootenay, y compris les survivants, les membres de la famille, les amis et les coll\u00e8gues, se sont r\u00e9unis le 23 octobre pour marquer le 55e anniversaire du pire accident en mer survenu en temps de paix \u00e0 la Marine royale du Canada (MRC).<\/p>\n

L'explosion et l'incendie qui s'en est suivi \u00e0 bord du NCSM Kootenay ont tu\u00e9 neuf marins le matin du 23 octobre 1969. Cinquante-trois membres de l'\u00e9quipage du navire ont \u00e9t\u00e9 gri\u00e8vement bless\u00e9s et trois autres sont d\u00e9c\u00e9d\u00e9s dans les semaines et les mois qui ont suivi l'incident. Ceux qui ont surv\u00e9cu ont gard\u00e9 des s\u00e9quelles physiques et mentales qui les accompagnent encore aujourd'hui.<\/p>\n

Les survivants du \u00ab Kootenay \u00bb se r\u00e9unissent chaque ann\u00e9e pour marquer cet anniversaire, \u00e0 la fois de mani\u00e8re officielle, avec la participation de la MRC et des proclamations du gouvernement, et de mani\u00e8re plus restreinte, avec les membres de l'\u00e9quipage.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00ab Nous avons tous navigu\u00e9 \u00e0 bord du Kootenay en ce jour fatidique, et nous avons tous cru en la devise du navire : \u00ab Nous ne faisons qu'un \u00bb. C'est une devise \u00e0 laquelle nous croyons toujours, comme le prouve ce rassemblement. Nous \u00e9tions un \u00e9quipage, et nous nous sommes av\u00e9r\u00e9s \u00eatre un tr\u00e8s bon \u00e9quipage \u00bb, a d\u00e9clar\u00e9 Gordon Forbes, qui \u00e9tait l'officier d'armement du Kootenay en 1969, alors qu'il lisait un \u00e9loge fun\u00e8bre pour ses compagnons de bord disparus.<\/p>\n

Les commentaires sur le professionnalisme et la t\u00e9nacit\u00e9 de l'\u00e9quipage ont \u00e9galement \u00e9t\u00e9 repris par le Dr Joe Homer, qui a \u00e9t\u00e9 le premier m\u00e9decin \u00e0 \u00eatre h\u00e9liport\u00e9 sur le navire apr\u00e8s l'explosion.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Il a d\u00e9crit les cons\u00e9quences de l'explosion comme l'une des situations les plus horribles qu'il ait rencontr\u00e9es en 40 ans de pratique de la m\u00e9decine, arrivant sur un navire couvert de feu et de fum\u00e9e dense, traitant des patients gravement br\u00fbl\u00e9s avec un \u00e9quipement limit\u00e9 et sans acc\u00e8s \u00e0 des installations m\u00e9dicales. Ceux qui \u00e9taient encore physiquement capables de lutter contre l'incendie et d'aider leurs compagnons d'infortune ont accompli un travail crucial pendant cette p\u00e9riode.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00ab Dans l'ensemble, il s'agissait d'un \u00e9quipage jeune et inexp\u00e9riment\u00e9. Pourtant, ils se sont battus avec acharnement, ils ont ma\u00eetris\u00e9 l'incendie et ils ont sauv\u00e9 le navire. C'est une certitude \u00bb, a-t-il d\u00e9clar\u00e9.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

L'explosion s'est produite en raison d'une installation d\u00e9fectueuse de roulements dans la bo\u00eete de vitesses tribord du navire, qui s'est rompue lors d'essais \u00e0 pleine puissance au large de la Manche. Les le\u00e7ons tir\u00e9es de cette catastrophe ont \u00e9t\u00e9 nombreuses et ont modifi\u00e9 la fa\u00e7on dont la MRC et les autres marines planifient le contr\u00f4le des avaries en mer. Le centre de formation \u00e0 la lutte contre les avaries de la c\u00f4te est de la marine, qui a accueilli une partie de la comm\u00e9moration le 23 octobre, a \u00e9t\u00e9 baptis\u00e9 Kootenay en l'honneur du navire et de son \u00e9quipage.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00ab J'esp\u00e8re sinc\u00e8rement que la Marine royale canadienne et les Forces arm\u00e9es canadiennes continueront d'honorer le d\u00e9vouement et le sacrifice des Kootenays longtemps apr\u00e8s notre d\u00e9part \u00bb, a ajout\u00e9 le Dr Homer.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
