L'histoire de la nation mi'kmaq a fait l'objet d'une pr\u00e9sentation devant une foule nombreuse dans la salle de bal de la Tour Juno de la base des Forces canadiennes (BFC) d'Halifax le 23 mai.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

L'\u00e9v\u00e9nement, organis\u00e9 par le Groupe consultatif des autochtones de la D\u00e9fense de l'Atlantique, s'est d\u00e9roul\u00e9 dans le cadre de la Semaine de sensibilisation aux cultures autochtones de la base. Le colonel honoraire (Col(h)) Donald Julien, membre du Grand Conseil Mi'kmaw et colonel honoraire de la 5e Division canadienne, \u00e9tait l'invit\u00e9 sp\u00e9cial et l'orateur principal de la journ\u00e9e.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Il a parl\u00e9 du travail du Grand Conseil Mi'kmaq et de sa place au sein de celui-ci, notant qu\u2019il s\u2019agit du plus ancien organe directeur de la r\u00e9gion. Il a d\u00e9clar\u00e9 que l\u2019histoire du Grand Conseil et du peuple Mi'kmaq remonte \u00e0 au moins 13 500 ans.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Sa conf\u00e9rence a port\u00e9 sur le mode de vie des Mi'Kmaq, leurs coutumes, leur gouvernement, leur territoire, leur langue et leurs relations historiques avec les Europ\u00e9ens et les Canadiens non autochtones. Des anecdotes sur le service du Col (h) Julien dans l'arm\u00e9e canadienne ont \u00e9maill\u00e9 sa conf\u00e9rence.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Il a \u00e9galement mis l'accent sur les restrictions qui ont limit\u00e9 les possibilit\u00e9s de service des autochtones pendant la Premi\u00e8re et la Seconde Guerre mondiale, notamment leur exclusion de la marine et de l'arm\u00e9e de l'air. Il a expliqu\u00e9 que de nombreux autochtones se sont rendus aux \u00c9tats-Unis pour avoir de meilleures chances de s'enr\u00f4ler.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Malgr\u00e9 les obstacles, des milliers d'autochtones ont servi et combattu dans les Forces arm\u00e9es canadiennes (FAC) \u00e0 partir de la Premi\u00e8re Guerre mondiale, a-t-il ajout\u00e9.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Le Col (h) Julien a \u00e9galement abord\u00e9 l'\u00e9volution des droits des autochtones, depuis les trait\u00e9s de paix et d'amiti\u00e9 conclus avec la Grande-Bretagne en 1725 jusqu'aux 94 recommandations du rapport final du Comit\u00e9 de v\u00e9rit\u00e9 et de r\u00e9conciliation en 2015.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Il a d\u00e9crit la longue lutte men\u00e9e par les Mi'kmaq et d'autres peuples autochtones pour faire reconna\u00eetre leurs droits issus de trait\u00e9s par le gouvernement canadien. Rappelant les points chauds de Burnt Church, le proc\u00e8s de Donald Marshal et la crise d'Oka, le Col (h) Julien a d\u00e9clar\u00e9 que le gouvernement f\u00e9d\u00e9ral avait longtemps offert des \u00ab promesses vides \u00bb aux peuples autochtones du Canada.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00ab Beaucoup de choses se sont produites avant le d\u00e9but du processus de v\u00e9rit\u00e9 et de r\u00e9conciliation. \u00bb<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Le Col (h) Julien si\u00e8ge \u00e9galement au conseil d'administration du futur centre culturel et mus\u00e9e micmac pr\u00e9vu \u00e0 Debert, dont la mission est de pr\u00e9server et de promouvoir l'histoire et la culture micmac. Pour raconter l'histoire des Mi'kmaq, le centre s'appuiera sur le travail du Col (h) Julien, qui a document\u00e9 l'histoire de son peuple.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00ab Cela va permettre \u00e0 notre peuple de renouer avec l'histoire et de retrouver sa fiert\u00e9 \u00bb, a-t-il d\u00e9clar\u00e9.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Debbie Eisan, a\u00een\u00e9e ojibway et capitaine de vaisseau honoraire, \u00e9tait \u00e9galement pr\u00e9sente ; elle a parl\u00e9 de l'importance des traditions autochtones et a demand\u00e9 aux FAC de continuer \u00e0 travailler \u00e0 la cr\u00e9ation d'un environnement plus ouvert et plus inclusif pour leurs membres autochtones. Elle a cit\u00e9 l'ouverture d'une suerie \u00e0 la 12e escadre Shearwater comme un exemple r\u00e9cent de progr\u00e8s.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
