Une \u00e9quipe polyvalente de b\u00e9n\u00e9voles, de membres du personnel de la Marine et de marins en formation a supervis\u00e9 le remorquage annuel du Navire canadien de Sa Majest\u00e9 (NCSM) Sackville jusqu'\u00e0 son port d'attache saisonnier sur le front de mer d'Halifax le 1er mai.<\/p>\n

Le Sackville a \u00e9t\u00e9 remorqu\u00e9 par un remorqueur depuis son poste d'amarrage hivernal \u00e0 l'Arsenal canadien de Sa Majest\u00e9 jusqu'au quai du d\u00e9barcad\u00e8re de Sackville, sur le front de mer de Halifax. C'est l\u00e0 que le Sackville reprendra son r\u00f4le de M\u00e9morial naval du Canada et de mus\u00e9e flottant.<\/p>\n

L'\u00e9quipage b\u00e9n\u00e9vole habituel du navire a \u00e9t\u00e9 assist\u00e9 ce jour-l\u00e0 par des marins d'autres navires de la Marine royale du Canada et des stagiaires du Programme d'exp\u00e9rience de la marine (PEM).\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Amarr\u00e9 pr\u00e8s de la statue embl\u00e9matique de la vague et en face du Mus\u00e9e maritime de l'Atlantique, le Sackville est facilement accessible aux milliers de touristes et d'habitants qui visiteront le front de mer d'Halifax lorsque le navire sera ouvert pour des visites, de la fin juin \u00e0 novembre.<\/p>\n

\u00ab L'ann\u00e9e derni\u00e8re, nous avons re\u00e7u environ 47 000 visiteurs \u00bb, explique le capitaine de fr\u00e9gate (\u00e0 la retrait\u00e9) Garry Reddy, commandant du Sackville. Il dirige le petit \u00e9quipage de b\u00e9n\u00e9voles du navire, compos\u00e9 de membres retrait\u00e9s de la MRC comme lui. Il explique que l'une de ses t\u00e2ches pr\u00e9f\u00e9r\u00e9es consiste \u00e0 enseigner l'histoire du navire aux visiteurs.<\/p>\n

\u00ab J'aime rencontrer les gens lorsqu'ils montent \u00e0 bord. Tous les Canadiens et les visiteurs internationaux du monde entier sont \u00e9merveill\u00e9s lorsqu'ils montent \u00e0 bord et que nous parlons du navire et de ce qu'il a fait. \u00bb<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

L'\u00e9ducation du public est une fonction importante pour le Sackville et son \u00e9quipage, mais la pr\u00e9servation physique du navire est \u00e9galement une priorit\u00e9 absolue selon le Capf (retrait\u00e9) Reddy. Selon lui, les dons des visiteurs sont essentiels \u00e0 la poursuite des activit\u00e9s du navire.<\/p>\n

\u00ab Nous encourageons tout le monde \u00e0 venir et nous ne faisons pas payer l'embarquement, mais nous demandons des dons... Notre pr\u00e9servation repose enti\u00e8rement sur les dons. \u00bb<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Le financement du maintien \u00e0 flot du Sackville est \u00e9galement assur\u00e9 par les dons de plus de 1 200 administrateurs du Canadian Naval Memorial Trust, l'organisation qui poss\u00e8de et exploite le navire. Un groupe d'administrateurs \u00e9tait \u00e0 bord en tant qu'invit\u00e9s pendant que le navire \u00e9tait remorqu\u00e9 vers sa r\u00e9sidence d'\u00e9t\u00e9.<\/p>\n

L'atmosph\u00e8re historique de Sackville a \u00e9galement sembl\u00e9 impressionner les marins du PEM qui ont particip\u00e9 au d\u00e9m\u00e9nagement vers le front de mer. Le matelot de 3e classe Matthew Hawkins a d\u00e9clar\u00e9 que le fait de travailler avec ses camarades du PEM \u00e0 bord du navire lui donnait l'impression de \u00ab contribuer \u00e0 l'histoire de la FAC. \u00bb<\/p>\n

Le NCSM Sackville, une corvette de la classe Fleur, a \u00e9t\u00e9 mis en service en 1941 et a servi d'escorte de convoi pendant la bataille de l'Atlantique. Le navire a particip\u00e9 \u00e0 de nombreux combats, notamment en ao\u00fbt 1942, lorsqu'il a attaqu\u00e9 trois sous-marins allemands en l'espace de 24 heures et en a mis deux hors de combat. Le Sackville a continu\u00e9 \u00e0 servir jusqu'\u00e0 ce qu'il soit endommag\u00e9 lors d'un autre engagement avec un sous-marin en septembre 1943. Il a ensuite servi de navire-\u00e9cole pour les officiers jusqu'\u00e0 la fin de la guerre.<\/p>\n

Apr\u00e8s la guerre, le navire a servi de navire de recherche oc\u00e9anographique navale et civile. Il a \u00e9t\u00e9 achet\u00e9 par le Canadian Naval Memorial Trust en 1983 et restaur\u00e9 dans sa configuration du temps de la guerre. En 1985, le gouvernement du Canada a d\u00e9sign\u00e9 le Sackville comme le m\u00e9morial naval du Canada.<\/p>\n

Le 5 mai, le navire a particip\u00e9 \u00e0 la c\u00e9r\u00e9monie de la bataille de l'Atlantique au parc Point Pleasant. L'\u00e9quipage du Sackville a d\u00e9pos\u00e9 une couronne comm\u00e9morative et a proc\u00e9d\u00e9 \u00e0 plusieurs enterrements en mer.<\/p>\n

Pendant l'\u00e9t\u00e9, le Sackville est ouvert aux visites de 10 \u00e0 16 heures, sept jours sur sept.
