James Leo Cummings est n\u00e9 le 28 f\u00e9vrier 1939 \u00e0 Marmora, en Ontario. Il a rejoint le Corps des cadets de la Marine royale du Canada Howe \u00e0 Peterborough \u00e0 l'\u00e2ge de 12 ans en 1951, et Jim a servi avec les cadets pendant quatre ans, devenant chef de corps, trompette solo et tambour-major de la fanfare. Il est ensuite entr\u00e9 dans l'orchestre de r\u00e9serve de l'arm\u00e9e, jusqu'\u00e0 ce qu'en 1956, \u00e0 l'occasion de son 17e anniversaire, il rejoigne la Marine royale canadienne (MRC) au NCSM York, \u00e0 Toronto.<\/p>\n

Jim a suivi sa formation de base au NCSM Cornwallis, puis des cours de formation professionnelle au NCSM Stadacona, ainsi que d'autres qualifications professionnelles \u00e0 bord des navires, ce qui lui a permis de passer au grade d'artificier en chef de la salle des machines (ERA). Jim a servi \u00e0 bord des navires suivants : NCSM Outremont, NCSM Micmac, NCSM Iroquois, NCSM Columbia, NCSM Chaleur, NCSM Cap de la Madeleine, NCSM Antigonish, NCSM Gatineau, NCSM Skeena, NCSM Assiniboine, NCSM Protecteur et NCSM Preserver. Il a \u00e9galement pass\u00e9 du temps sur la terre ferme \u00e0 l'ancien NCSM Shearwater, au NCSM Naden, au quartier g\u00e9n\u00e9ral du Commandement maritime et au chantier naval canadien Vickers \u00e0 Montr\u00e9al.<\/p>\n

De nombreux pays ont \u00e9t\u00e9 visit\u00e9s au cours de la carri\u00e8re de Jim en raison du nombre de tourn\u00e9es de l'OTAN auxquelles il a particip\u00e9 : l'Angleterre, l'Irlande, l'\u00c9cosse, la France, l'Allemagne, le Danemark, la Norv\u00e8ge, la Finlande, l'Espagne, le Portugal, l'Afrique, les c\u00f4tes est et ouest des \u00c9tats-Unis, ainsi que les eaux septentrionales du Canada.<\/span><\/p>\n

Jim a servi pendant 26 ans dans la MRC et a pris sa retraite en tant que premier ma\u00eetre de 1re classe ERA.<\/span><\/p>\n

Jim a re\u00e7u la D\u00e9coration des Forces canadiennes ainsi que la M\u00e9daille du service sp\u00e9cial. Pour son service b\u00e9n\u00e9vole \u00e0 l'H\u00f4pital comm\u00e9moratif des v\u00e9t\u00e9rans de Camp Hill avec son chien th\u00e9rapeutique Stoker (ce qu'il fait toujours), il a \u00e9t\u00e9 nomm\u00e9 chevalier de l'Ordre de Saint-Georges et a re\u00e7u la Mention \u00e9logieuse du ministre des Anciens Combattants.<\/span><\/p>\n

Avant sa lib\u00e9ration en mai 1982, Jim a eu sa derni\u00e8re affectation en mer \u00e0 bord du NCSM Protecteur en tant que chef ERA, et sa derni\u00e8re affectation \u00e0 terre \u00e0 l'ancienne \u00c9cole du g\u00e9nie naval des Forces canadiennes en tant qu'instructeur en chef. Apr\u00e8s avoir quitt\u00e9 la marine, Jim a travaill\u00e9 comme ajusteur m\u00e9canique \u00e0 l'arsenal, puis est devenu inspecteur des chaudi\u00e8res du commandement maritime avant de prendre sa retraite en 1998. Non content de n'avoir rien \u00e0 faire, il est devenu guide touristique sur un bateau de croisi\u00e8re, jusqu'\u00e0 ce que la pand\u00e9mie de grippe aviaire frappe.<\/p>\n

Jim a \u00e9pous\u00e9 Mildred Cecelia Snow, de Canso (Nouvelle-\u00c9cosse), le 19 septembre 2023, et le couple a c\u00e9l\u00e9br\u00e9 son 64e anniversaire. Nous leur adressons toutes nos f\u00e9licitations. Ils ont eu la chance d'avoir deux fils et deux filles, 11 petits-enfants, 17 arri\u00e8re-petits-enfants et un arri\u00e8re-arri\u00e8re-petit-enfant.<\/span><\/p>\n

Leurs deux fils ont servi dans la Marine royale canadienne. L'a\u00een\u00e9, Christopher, a pris sa retraite en tant que premier ma\u00eetre de 1re classe ERA apr\u00e8s 32 ans de service, et Colin a d'abord rejoint l'arm\u00e9e de l'air en tant que communicateur, avant de passer \u00e0 la marine en tant que technicien de coque, puis de prendre sa commission en tant que lieutenant de vaisseau charg\u00e9 de la logistique, et de prendre sa retraite apr\u00e8s 27 ans de service. Une sacr\u00e9e tradition dans les forces arm\u00e9es canadiennes pour la famille Cummings !<\/span><\/p>\n

Jim dit qu'il sait que la raison pour laquelle il a r\u00e9ussi dans la marine et dans la vie civile est sa compagne Millie, qui a gard\u00e9 les feux de la maison allum\u00e9s pendant toutes les ann\u00e9es o\u00f9 il \u00e9tait en mer.<\/span><\/p>\n
