La vie et l'h\u00e9ritage du ma\u00eetre William Hall ainsi que l'histoire militaire des Noirs au Canada ont fait l'objet d'une pr\u00e9sentation dans la salle de bal de la tour Juno le 29 f\u00e9vrier. L'\u00e9v\u00e9nement a servi de cl\u00f4ture \u00e0 la c\u00e9l\u00e9bration du Mois du patrimoine africain de cette ann\u00e9e \u00e0 la Base des Forces canadiennes (BFC) Halifax.<\/p>\n

Afua Cooper, historienne et professeure \u00e0 l'Universit\u00e9 Dalhousie, a pr\u00e9sent\u00e9 aux participants l'histoire de William Hall, premier Noir et premier Canadien \u00e0 recevoir la plus haute distinction de l'Empire britannique pour bravoure, la Croix de Victoria. Il a re\u00e7u cette m\u00e9daille pour ses actions lors du si\u00e8ge de Lucknow pendant la r\u00e9bellion indienne en 1857.<\/p>\n

Cooper a int\u00e9gr\u00e9 l'histoire de la carri\u00e8re navale de Hall, qui a dur\u00e9 29 ans, dans un r\u00e9cit plus large sur les Afro-Canadiens dans l'arm\u00e9e. Selon elle, le service des Canadiens noirs est un \u00e9l\u00e9ment important de l'histoire militaire du Canada.<\/p>\n

\u00ab Ils ont particip\u00e9 \u00e0 tous les grands conflits de l'histoire du Canada. \u00bb<\/p>\n

Cooper a soulign\u00e9 l'importance de la reconnaissance de William Hall et de l'esprit dans lequel il a servi. Elle s'est r\u00e9jouie de cette prise de conscience de l'homme et de son h\u00e9ritage, qui n'avait que trop tard\u00e9.<\/p>\n

\u00ab Je suis ravie qu'il soit reconnu aujourd'hui, car lorsqu'il est rentr\u00e9 chez lui, il a \u00e9t\u00e9 oubli\u00e9 par l'arm\u00e9e britannique. \u00bb<\/p>\n

La Croix de Victoria de Hall a \u00e9t\u00e9 mise en \u00e9vidence lors de la pr\u00e9sentation. Elle \u00e9tait plac\u00e9e dans une vitrine en verre au centre de la pi\u00e8ce. La m\u00e9daille a \u00e9t\u00e9 pr\u00eat\u00e9e par le Mus\u00e9e maritime de l'Atlantique. De nombreux participants se sont arr\u00eat\u00e9s pour prendre une photo avec l'artefact avant ou apr\u00e8s la pr\u00e9sentation.<\/p>\n

Au cours de l'\u00e9v\u00e9nement, la foule a pu entendre la musicienne Reeny Smith, laur\u00e9ate du prix Music Nova Scotia, accompagn\u00e9e du la Musique Stadacona, interpr\u00e9ter l'hymne Lift Every Voice and Sing (Levez chaque voix et chantez).<\/p>\n

La contre-amiral Jos\u00e9e Kurtz, la ministre responsable des relations militaires, la d\u00e9put\u00e9e Barbra Adams, et un message enregistr\u00e9 du Capitaine de fr\u00e9gate Scott Kelemen et de son \u00e9quipage \u00e0 bord du navire canadien de Sa Majest\u00e9 (NCSM) William Hall ont pris la parole.<\/p>\n

Dans son discours de cl\u00f4ture, la Cam Kurtz, commandant des Forces maritimes de l'Atlantique et de la Force op\u00e9rationnelle interarm\u00e9es de l'Atlantique, a d\u00e9clar\u00e9 que le fait que la Marine royale canadienne donne le nom de Hall \u00e0 son nouveau navire de patrouille extrac\u00f4tier et arctique constituait une fa\u00e7on particuli\u00e8re d'honorer son h\u00e9ritage.<\/p>\n
