Il a \u00e9t\u00e9 membre des scouts du Canada et, une fois en \u00e2ge de le faire, il a\nrejoint le corps des cadets de la marine royale canadienne. Jim a suivi les cours d&#039;\u00e9t\u00e9\ndes cadets de la marine en Nouvelle-\u00c9cosse, au NCSM Acadia \u00e0 Sydney et au NCSM\nCornwallis \u00e0 Deep Brook. \u00c0 l&#039;\u00e2ge de 17 ans, il s&#039;est engag\u00e9 dans la Marine royale du\nCanada (MRC) et a \u00e9t\u00e9 s\u00e9lectionn\u00e9 pour le m\u00e9tier de sonarman.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">M. Gordon a suivi l&#039;entra\u00eenement de base au NCSM Cornwallis ; l&#039;entra\u00eenement du\ngroupe professionnel 1 et du groupe professionnel 2 du sonar \u00e0 l&#039;\u00e9cole de la flotte, au\nNCSM Stadacona ; le cours d&#039;entra\u00eenement de base du sous-marin et l&#039;entra\u00eenement du\nr\u00e9servoir d&#039;\u00e9vacuation du sous-marin au HMS Dolphin, \u00e0 Gosport, en Angleterre ; le\ncours du groupe professionnel 3 du sonar \u00e0 l&#039;\u00e9cole de la flotte des Forces canadiennes,\n\u00e0 la BFC Halifax ; Cours de leadership sup\u00e9rieur \u00e0 la BFC Borden ; principes de l&#039;\u00e9tat\nsolide et techniques informatiques \u00e0 l&#039;Universit\u00e9 technique de la Nouvelle-\u00c9cosse ; et\ndiverses mises \u00e0 jour de l&#039;\u00e9quipement, rafra\u00eechissement des proc\u00e9dures op\u00e9rationnelles\ndes navires et des sous-marins et formation au leadership tout au long de sa carri\u00e8re au\nCanada, en Angleterre et aux \u00c9tats-Unis.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\" translation-block\">Jim a notamment servi sur son premier navire, le NCSM Columbia, pendant la crise des\nmissiles de Cuba en 1962. Il a ainsi pu mettre \u00e0 profit ses comp\u00e9tences en mati\u00e8re de\nsonar pour rechercher les sous-marins sovi\u00e9tiques qui tentaient de poser des missiles\nbalistiques \u00e0 Cuba. Il a \u00e9galement fait partie du NCSM Ojibwa lors de la mise en service\ndu sous-marin \u00e0 Chatham, en Angleterre, en 1965. Il est \u00e9galement fier d&#039;avoir \u00e9t\u00e9\nnomm\u00e9 au grade de premier ma\u00eetre de premi\u00e8re classe et d&#039;avoir occup\u00e9 les postes de\npremier ma\u00eetre de la base de Halifax, puis de premier ma\u00eetre de la formation de la flotte\nde l&#039;Atlantique.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jim a servi \u00e0 bord de navires et de sous-marins pendant la guerre froide, dans les eaux\ndes oc\u00e9ans Atlantique et Arctique, ainsi que dans les Cara\u00efbes, la M\u00e9diterran\u00e9e, la mer\n\nBaltique, la mer Noire et la mer du Nord. Apr\u00e8s sa promotion au grade de premier ma\u00eetre\nde 1re classe en 1984, il a \u00e9t\u00e9 capitaine d&#039;armes du premier escadron canadien de sous-\nmarins (1985), du NCSM Iroquois (1987) et du Groupe d&#039;entra\u00eenement des sous-marins\ncanadiens (1988). Il a servi comme premier ma\u00eetre de la base de Halifax en 1991 et\ncomme premier ma\u00eetre de la formation de la flotte de l&#039;Atlantique en 1994. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">et NCSM Ojibwa<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (1982) and HMCS <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ojibwa <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(1984) at the rank of Chief Petty Officer 2nd Class. After his promotion to Chief Petty Officer 1st Class in 1984, he served as Coxswain of First Canadian Submarine Squadron (1985), HMCS <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Iroquois<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (1987), and Canadian Submarine Training Group (1988). He served as Base Chief for CFB Halifax in 1991 and Atlantic Fleet Formation Chief in 1994.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jim a \u00e9galement \u00e9t\u00e9 nomm\u00e9 membre de l&#039;Ordre du m\u00e9rite militaire en 1989. Il a pris sa\nretraite en juillet 1997 apr\u00e8s 35 ans de service.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Un fait tr\u00e8s int\u00e9ressant \u00e0 propos de Jim concerne son surnom \u00ab Lucky. \u00bb Alors qu&#039;il\nservait en Angleterre en 1965, les marins de la Royal Navy, sachant que les Canadiens\n\u00e9taient bien pay\u00e9s, ont attir\u00e9 un jeune matelot na\u00eff, Gordon, dans leur \u00e9cole de poker\nnocturne. SOUMIS<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Le poker \u00e9tait tout \u00e0 fait ill\u00e9gal dans la Royal Navy. Le jeu auquel les Britanniques ont\niniti\u00e9 Gordon, le Pontoon, est un jeu dont il n&#039;avait jamais entendu parler, mais qu&#039;ils\n\u00e9taient impatients de lui enseigner. Avec des regards amus\u00e9s et en se frottant les\nmains, les Britanniques ont distribu\u00e9 et expliqu\u00e9 le jeu que Jim a imm\u00e9diatement\nreconnu comme \u00e9tant le Blackjack, un jeu pour lequel il \u00e9tait tr\u00e8s dou\u00e9.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alors que l&#039;argent changeait de main et s&#039;accumulait devant Gordon, les Britanniques\ncommenc\u00e8rent \u00e0 l&#039;appeler \u00ab ce chanceux (juron) Gordon. \u00bb \u00c0 la m\u00eame \u00e9poque, les\ntablo\u00efds anglais couvrent sans rel\u00e2che l&#039;affaire Christine Keeler, qui implique les\nrelations scandaleuses d&#039;un jeune mannequin avec un diplomate sovi\u00e9tique, un ministre\ndu gouvernement britannique et un musicien jama\u00efcain, criminel pr\u00e9sum\u00e9, nomm\u00e9\nAloysius \u00ab Lucky \u00bb Gordon. \u00c0 l&#039;\u00e9poque, ce nom faisait la une des journaux jour apr\u00e8s\njour, et le surnom est rest\u00e9 depuis plus de 60 ans.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Apr\u00e8s sa retraite, Jim a supervis\u00e9 la construction, le d\u00e9veloppement et l&#039;exploitation du\ncentre de loisirs de Falls Lake, \u00e0 Vaughan, en Nouvelle-\u00c9cosse. Il a pris une retraite\ncompl\u00e8te en 2000 lorsque sa femme Eve, qui avait v\u00e9cu 35 ans, est tomb\u00e9e gravement\nmalade et est d\u00e9c\u00e9d\u00e9e en 2003.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jim a \u00e9pous\u00e9 Eve en 1965 - elle l&#039;a accompagn\u00e9 en Angleterre alors qu&#039;il \u00e9tait en service\ntemporaire pour suivre une formation de sous-marinier. Ils ont deux enfants, Kimberley\n\nAnn (Kim), n\u00e9e en 1966, et Michael (Mike), n\u00e9 en 1969, des petits-enfants, Paige, Amie,\nMarshall et Jack, et des arri\u00e8re-petits-enfants, Jaxon, Finn et Archer.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jim a rencontr\u00e9 sa deuxi\u00e8me femme, Leslie, en 2003 et l&#039;a \u00e9pous\u00e9e en 2006.. Ils ont\noccup\u00e9 leur temps \u00e0 faire du bateau et \u00e0 voyager, \u00e0 vivre \u00e0 Halifax et, finalement, \u00e0\ns&#039;installer dans leur maison d&#039;hiver \u00e0 Bonita Springs, en Floride.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mike a suivi son p\u00e8re dans la marine en 1992 en tant que communicateur naval et a\nr\u00e9cemment pris sa retraite pour poursuivre une autre carri\u00e8re dans la communication.\nLes deux fils de Mike, Marshall Gordon et Jack Gordon, ont \u00e9galement rejoint la MRC.\nUn bel h\u00e9ritage familial, n&#039;est-ce pas ?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jim insiste sur le fait que toute sa famille a jou\u00e9 un r\u00f4le important dans sa carri\u00e8re\nnavale et y a contribu\u00e9.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Toujours l\u00e0, toujours pr\u00eats.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Les profils de \u00ab La MRC fi\u00e8re \u00bb se concentrent sur le personnel de la Marine royale du Canada,\nancien ou actuel.
