En tant que personne vivant avec un handicap, notamment un trouble d\u00e9ficitaire de l'attention,\nTova Sherman conna\u00eet tr\u00e8s bien les stigmates qui entourent le handicap et les difficult\u00e9s qui\npeuvent survenir en raison de l'ignorance ou de malentendus.<\/span><\/p>\n

C'est pourquoi elle et son organisation, l'association reachAbility, d\u00e9fendent le concept de \u00ab\nconfiance en le handicap \u00bb pour aider les employeurs \u00e0 d\u00e9velopper des cultures et des\npratiques d'embauche qui favorisent l'inclusion des personnes handicap\u00e9es.<\/span><\/p>\n

J'adore l'expression \u00ab confiance en le handicap \u00bb, car elle signifie qu'il ne faut pas \u00e9viter les\nchoses, mais \u00eatre curieux et parler aux gens pour les comprendre \u00bb, a d\u00e9clar\u00e9 Mme Sherman\nlors du discours d'ouverture de l'\u00e9v\u00e9nement organis\u00e9 par la BFC Halifax \u00e0 l'occasion de la\nJourn\u00e9e internationale des personnes handicap\u00e9es (JIPH), le 1er d\u00e9cembre, \u00e0 la tour Juno.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00ab Un manque de confiance en soi cr\u00e9e un malaise lorsqu'on interagit ou qu'on travaille avec une\npersonne handicap\u00e9e. Il en r\u00e9sulte souvent un d\u00e9sengagement. Les gens pr\u00e9f\u00e8rent ne pas\nparler \u00e0 quelqu'un plut\u00f4t que d'\u00eatre mal \u00e0 l'aise. \u00bb<\/span><\/p>\n

L'association ReachAbility propose des programmes et des services destin\u00e9s aux employeurs,\naux employ\u00e9s potentiels et \u00e0 l'ensemble de la communaut\u00e9, tous ax\u00e9s sur l'inclusion et\nl'\u00e9galisation des chances pour les personnes handicap\u00e9es.<\/span><\/p>\n

Elle a encourag\u00e9 le MDN \u00e0 devenir un employeur confiant dans le handicap par la\ncommunication, le leadership et l'\u00e9ducation sur les questions touchant les personnes\nhandicap\u00e9es, et par des politiques qui garantissent que l'adaptation aux handicaps est la norme\net une pratique r\u00e9guli\u00e8re, plut\u00f4t que d'\u00eatre consid\u00e9r\u00e9e comme un fardeau ou une mesure\nextraordinaire. \u00ab Nous devons identifier ce qui se passe avec nos employ\u00e9s, puis trouver comment nous\npouvons l'accommoder \u00bb, a-t-elle d\u00e9clar\u00e9.<\/span>

\n<\/span>Mme Sherman a \u00e9t\u00e9 invit\u00e9e \u00e0 prendre la parole par la section des FMAR(A) du Groupe\nconsultatif de la d\u00e9fense pour les personnes handicap\u00e9es (GCDPH), qui a organis\u00e9\nl'\u00e9v\u00e9nement qui a attir\u00e9 beaucoup de monde. Parmi les autres intervenants invit\u00e9s figuraient\ndes repr\u00e9sentants de la Tetra Society nord-am\u00e9ricaine, sp\u00e9cialis\u00e9e dans les solutions destin\u00e9es\n\u00e0 aider les personnes handicap\u00e9es \u00e0 surmonter les obstacles environnementaux, ainsi que la\nDirection de l'accessibilit\u00e9 de la province de Nouvelle-\u00c9cosse.<\/span><\/p>\n

La salle a \u00e9galement entendu des membres de la GCDPH elle-m\u00eame, y compris le nouveau\ncopr\u00e9sident militaire du groupe, le matelot de 1\u00e8re classe Steve Happe. Le Mat 1 Happe a\n\nparticip\u00e9 \u00e0 l'\u00e9v\u00e9nement de JIPH de l'ann\u00e9e derni\u00e8re en tant que conf\u00e9rencier, accompagnant sa\npartenaire et gestionnaire de l'engagement communautaire de l'INCA, Shelley Adams, et il s'est\ndepuis impliqu\u00e9 davantage. \u00ab Aujourd'hui, il s'agit de promouvoir les droits et le bien-\u00eatre des personnes handicap\u00e9es \u00e0 tous\nles niveaux de la soci\u00e9t\u00e9 et du d\u00e9veloppement, et de sensibiliser aux situations auxquelles elles\nsont confront\u00e9es dans tous les aspects de la vie politique, sociale, \u00e9conomique et culturelle.\nC'est aussi le moment de c\u00e9l\u00e9brer leurs r\u00e9alisations et leurs succ\u00e8s \u00bb, a d\u00e9clar\u00e9 le Mat 1 Happe\npour lancer le programme de la journ\u00e9e.<\/span><\/p>\n
