Dans le contexte de l\u2019histoire militaire canadienne, certaines personnes se d\u00e9marquent comme\ndes pionni\u00e8res qui ont bris\u00e9 des plafonds de verre et ouvert la voie pour les g\u00e9n\u00e9rations futures.\nLa commodore (\u00e0 la retraite) Laraine Orthlieb est l\u2019une de ces personnes. Comme elle a\nr\u00e9cemment f\u00eat\u00e9 son 85e anniversaire, c\u2019est un moment opportun pour revenir sur ses\ncontributions extraordinaires \u00e0 la Marine royale canadienne et \u00e0 l\u2019impact durable qu\u2019elle a laiss\u00e9\nsur la communaut\u00e9 gr\u00e2ce \u00e0 sa participation au Mus\u00e9e naval.<\/span><\/p>\n

Le cheminement de la Cmdre Orthlieb pour devenir la premi\u00e8re femme de la R\u00e9serve de la\nMarine royale canadienne promue au grade de commodore s\u2019est \u00e9chelonn\u00e9 sur toute une vie\nde r\u00e9alisations remarquables. N\u00e9e en 1938 \u00e0 Saint John, au Nouveau-Brunswick, elle a grandi\n\u00e0 une \u00e9poque o\u00f9 les r\u00f4les homme-femme \u00e9taient profond\u00e9ment enracin\u00e9s. Pourtant, d\u00e8s son\nplus jeune \u00e2ge, la Cmdre Orthlieb se montrait r\u00e9solument d\u00e9termin\u00e9e \u00e0 se lib\u00e9rer des normes\nconventionnelles qui cherchaient \u00e0 limiter ses ambitions.<\/span><\/p>\n

Bien qu\u2019elle se soit enr\u00f4l\u00e9e pour la premi\u00e8re fois dans la Marine comme infirmi\u00e8re en 1959, elle\na choisi d\u2019\u00e9lever une famille et de travailler comme infirmi\u00e8re autoris\u00e9e civile \u2014 jusqu\u2019en 1974,\nann\u00e9e o\u00f9 elle s\u2019est enr\u00f4l\u00e9e de nouveau dans la R\u00e9serve navale. Elle a ensuite effectu\u00e9 un\nreclassement dans un m\u00e9tier connu sous le nom de \u00ab\u2009contr\u00f4le naval de la navigation\nmaritime\u2009\u00bb, car elle esp\u00e9rait aller en mer. Elle \u00e9tait loin de se douter que ce d\u00e9sir serait l\u2019une\ndes premi\u00e8res \u00e9tapes d\u2019un important changement de carri\u00e8re. Lorsqu\u2019on lui a pos\u00e9 la question,\nla Cmdre Orthlieb se souvient d\u2019une situation qui d\u00e9montre sa volont\u00e9 de repousser les limites\nqui \u00e9taient fermement \u00e9tablies \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9poque :\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00ab\u2009Un de mes premiers souvenirs est celui o\u00f9 j\u2019ai appris que la formation en mer avait \u00e9t\u00e9\nannul\u00e9e, car il n\u2019y avait pas suffisamment de marins. Au fil des ans, j\u2019ai demand\u00e9 \u00e0 maintes\nreprises d\u2019aller en mer. On m\u2019a toujours dit que les femmes n\u2019\u00e9taient pas aptes \u00e0 aller en mer\ndans la marine. J\u2019ai propos\u00e9 au commandant (cmdt) que les femmes du NCSM Tecumseh\npuissent s\u2019ajouter \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9quipage. Le cmdt lui a r\u00e9pondu que c\u2019\u00e9tait impossible. L\u2019une des\nnombreuses raisons qu\u2019il a mentionn\u00e9es \u00e9tait que les femmes ne pouvaient pas dormir \u00e0 bord\nd\u2019un navire. J\u2019ai donc demand\u00e9 des fonds au mess des matelots. Il est venu \u00e0 notre rescousse\net a donn\u00e9 des fonds pour l\u2019h\u00e9bergement de nuit \u00e0 terre.<\/p>\n

J\u2019ai \u00e9labor\u00e9 un plan d\u00e9taill\u00e9, et apr\u00e8s plusieurs tentatives pour convaincre le commandant, il a\nconvenu que les femmes pourraient s\u2019ajouter \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9quipage. Nous savions que si nous ne\nfaisions pas bonne figure, nous ne pourrions plus jamais en avoir l\u2019occasion. Les autres femmes\net moi avons fait un excellent travail \u00e0 bord du navire! C\u2019\u00e9tait le d\u00e9but; la premi\u00e8re exp\u00e9rience\nd\u2019avoir enfin la possibilit\u00e9 d\u2019aller en mer.\u2009\u00bb<\/span><\/p>\n

Sa d\u00e9termination et sa volont\u00e9 de se surpasser lui ont valu des niveaux de responsabilit\u00e9 plus\n\u00e9lev\u00e9s. En 1983, 24 ans apr\u00e8s son enr\u00f4lement, elle a pris le commandement du Navire\ncanadien de Sa Majest\u00e9 (NCSM) Tecumseh, une division de la R\u00e9serve navale (DRN) bas\u00e9e \u00e0\n\nCalgary, en Alberta. Cette nomination \u00e9tait historique, car elle a \u00e9t\u00e9 la premi\u00e8re femme \u00e0\nassumer un r\u00f4le de leadership de haut niveau au sein du NCSM Tecumseh.<\/p>\n

Le mandat de la Cmdre Orthlieb \u00e0 titre de commandante du NCSM Tecumseh de 1983 \u00e0 1987\na \u00e9t\u00e9 marqu\u00e9 par un engagement envers l\u2019excellence et une passion pour la promotion de\nl\u2019inclusion. Sous sa direction, la DRN a progress\u00e9, atteignant de nouveaux niveaux de\nprofessionnalisme et d\u2019\u00e9tat de pr\u00e9paration. Cette excellence a \u00e9t\u00e9 soulign\u00e9e. En 1985, le NCSM\nTecumseh a remport\u00e9 le prix de la meilleure division de la R\u00e9serve navale. Il a remport\u00e9 le prix\npour avoir fait preuve d\u2019excellence \u00e0 la fois au niveau de la direction et \u00e0 tous les niveaux\ninf\u00e9rieurs. Son d\u00e9vouement envers les fiers hommes et femmes sous son commandement lui a\nvalu le respect et l\u2019admiration de ses coll\u00e8gues, mettant ainsi la barre \u00e9lev\u00e9e pour les futurs\ndirigeants.<\/p>\n

L\u2019\u00e9limination des obstacles n\u2019a pas \u00e9t\u00e9 sans difficult\u00e9. La Cmdre Orthlieb a fait face au\nscepticisme et \u00e0 la r\u00e9sistance en cours de route, mais sa d\u00e9termination in\u00e9branlable et ses\ncomp\u00e9tences ont fait taire les sceptiques. Son ascension dans les grades a envoy\u00e9 un\nmessage clair : le sexe ne devrait jamais emp\u00eacher une personne de r\u00e9aliser son plein\npotentiel. Comme preuve de sa d\u00e9termination, elle a \u00e9t\u00e9 promue au grade de commodore en\n1989, devenant ainsi la premi\u00e8re femme \u00e0 occuper le poste d\u2019officier g\u00e9n\u00e9ral dans la Marine\nroyale canadienne.<\/span><\/p>\n

Au-del\u00e0 de sa brillante carri\u00e8re navale, la Cmdre Orthlieb a contribu\u00e9 \u00e0 la pr\u00e9servation du riche\npatrimoine maritime canadien. Elle a jou\u00e9 un r\u00f4le de premier plan dans la cr\u00e9ation du Mus\u00e9e\nnaval de l\u2019Alberta, un \u00e9l\u00e9ment essentiel du complexe des mus\u00e9es militaires \u00e0 Calgary, en\nAlberta. Sa passion pour l\u2019histoire navale et sa volont\u00e9 de la partager avec le public ont\ncontribu\u00e9 \u00e0 faire du mus\u00e9e une r\u00e9alit\u00e9.<\/span><\/p>\n

Le Mus\u00e9e naval de l\u2019Alberta est un tr\u00e9sor d\u2019artefacts, d\u2019histoires et de souvenirs pour souligner\nl\u2019histoire navale du Canada. C\u2019est un endroit o\u00f9 les visiteurs peuvent explorer le pass\u00e9 maritime\ndu pays et se familiariser avec les sacrifices de ceux qui ont servi dans la Marine royale\ncanadienne. La vision de la Cmdre Orthlieb et ses efforts inlassables ont fait en sorte que cette\ninstitution rend hommage en permanence au patrimoine naval canadien.<\/span><\/p>\n

Alors que nous c\u00e9l\u00e9brons son 85e anniversaire, reconnaissons et honorons l\u2019esprit indomptable\nde la commodore (\u00e0 la retraite) Laraine Orthlieb, pionni\u00e8re, leader et gardienne du patrimoine\nnaval canadien.
