Jim s&#039;est\nengag\u00e9 dans la R\u00e9serve navale \u00e0 l&#039;\u00e2ge de 16 ans, le 8 octobre 1969, au NCSM Brunswicker. Le\n20 avril 1971, il s&#039;est engag\u00e9 dans la Force r\u00e9guli\u00e8re en tant que radiateur. M. Northrup a suivi\nsa formation de base \u00e0 la SRFC Cornwallis, son cours d&#039;instruction en mer \u00e0 l&#039;\u00c9cole navale des\nForces canadiennes Halifax (Stadacona) et son cours de radiot\u00e9l\u00e9graphiste TQ3 \u00e0 l&#039;\u00c9cole\nnavale des Forces canadiennes Esquimalt, en Colombie-Britannique. Il a suivi le cours TQ5 \u00e0 la\nCFFS d&#039;Halifax en 1979\/1980 et a obtenu le titre de technicien en communication \u00e0 l&#039;issue de ce\ncours. SOUMIS<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\" translation-block\">Au cours de sa carri\u00e8re, il a navigu\u00e9 sur les NCSM Porte St Jean (1970), NCSM Nipigon\n(1972\/1975), NCSM Ojibwa, NCSM Okanagan, NCSM Onondaga (\u00e9quipage de d\u00e9sarmement\n2000), NCSM Montr\u00e9al (1993\/1995) (\u00e9quipage de mise en service) (OTAN 1995), NCSM\nPreserver (1998\/2000) (d\u00e9sastre du vol 111 de SwissAir), NCSM Windsor (2002 pour une\naffectation de 18 mois), NCSM Athabaskan (2004\/2005), et NCSM Corner Brook (2006\/2009). Il\na \u00e9galement particip\u00e9 \u00e0 l&#039;entra\u00eenement en mer des sous-marins en 2009-2011.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Il a \u00e9t\u00e9 affect\u00e9 \u00e0 terre au Premier Escadron de sous-marins du Canada (1989), au 5e Groupe\ndes op\u00e9rations maritimes en 1991, au Groupe de maintenance de la flotte de l&#039;Atlantique et \u00e0\nl&#039;Installation de maintenance de la flotte Cape Scott en 1995, \u00e0 l&#039;\u00c9cole des op\u00e9rations navales\ndes Forces canadiennes en tant qu&#039;instructeur en sous-marins en 2000 et \u00e0 l&#039;\u00c9cole des normes\nsous-marines en 2005. Il a \u00e9galement suivi la formation CPF \u00e0 Montr\u00e9al en 2001. Apr\u00e8s avoir\nsuivi des cours au Royaume-Uni et une formation \u00e0 Halifax, il s&#039;est qualifi\u00e9 pour les sous-marins\nde la classe Victoria en 2001. En 2011, il a \u00e9t\u00e9 affect\u00e9 \u00e0 l&#039;Unit\u00e9 interarm\u00e9es de soutien du\npersonnel jusqu&#039;\u00e0 sa retraite le 15 avril 2013.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">En mai 1992, Jim a \u00e9t\u00e9 envoy\u00e9 \u00e0 la BFC Petawawa pendant plusieurs semaines pour une\nformation de pr\u00e9-d\u00e9ploiement des Nations Unies, puis il a \u00e9t\u00e9 envoy\u00e9 au Cambodge\n(APRONUC) en tant qu'observateur militaire, o\u00f9 il a effectu\u00e9 deux tours, revenant au Canada le\n15 juin 1993, avant d'\u00eatre affect\u00e9 au NCSM Montr\u00e9al. Tout au long de sa carri\u00e8re, il a navigu\u00e9\nau Canada, au Cambodge, dans l'oc\u00e9an Atlantique, la mer des Cara\u00efbes, la M\u00e9diterran\u00e9e, la\nmer du Nord, la Baltique, l'Adriatique, le golfe de Siam et le long du <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Montr\u00e9al<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jim a \u00e9t\u00e9 d\u00e9cor\u00e9 du titre de Commandeur de l&#039;Ordre de Saint-Jean, de la M\u00e9daille du service\nsp\u00e9cial, de la M\u00e9daille canadienne du maintien de la paix, de la M\u00e9daille du service\nop\u00e9rationnel (campagne), de la M\u00e9daille des Nations unies (Cambodge : deux missions), de la\nM\u00e9daille de l&#039;OTAN (ex-Yougoslavie), de la M\u00e9daille d&#039;anciennet\u00e9 de l&#039;Ambulance Saint-Jean,\ndu titre de Chevalier de campagne de l&#039;Ordre de Saint-Georges, de la M\u00e9daille du jubil\u00e9 de\ndiamant de la Reine, de la M\u00e9daille de la d\u00e9coration des Forces canadiennes avec trois\nbarrettes et, \u00e0 deux reprises, du Prix de sauvetage de l&#039;Ambulance Saint-Jean (avec risque).\nJim a \u00e9t\u00e9 lib\u00e9r\u00e9 pour raisons m\u00e9dicales le 15 avril 2013, et son grade \u00e9tait celui de Premier\nma\u00eetre de 2e classe. Son m\u00e9tier \u00e9tait responsable de l&#039;ing\u00e9nierie de l&#039;armement. Jim est mari\u00e9 \u00e0\n\nDenise Jones, de Big Pond, au Cap-Breton, en Nouvelle-\u00c9cosse. Il a un beau-fils, Colin. Ils\nvivent \u00e0 Dartmouth, en Nouvelle-\u00c9cosse.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\" translation-block\">M. Northrup fait partie de la troisi\u00e8me g\u00e9n\u00e9ration de personnel naval. Son grand-p\u00e8re, Cecil \u00ab\nMac \u00bb McCoy, s&#039;est joint \u00e0 la compagnie compl\u00e8te de la RVMRC \u00e0 Saint John (NCSM\nBrunswicker) en mai 1923. Il \u00e9tait armurier et a quitt\u00e9 la RVMRC \u00e0 la fin de la Seconde Guerre\nmondiale. Le p\u00e8re de Jim, Allison Northrup, \u00e9tait l&#039;un des rares cadets de la marine \u00e0 avoir pris\nla mer \u00e0 la fin de la Seconde Guerre mondiale. Au milieu des ann\u00e9es 1950, il est devenu officier\nd&#039;approvisionnement (lieutenant) lors de la construction du nouveau camp des cadets de la\nmarine du NCSM Acadia \u00e0 Point Edward, au Cap-Breton, et a pris sa retraite apr\u00e8s avoir\nachev\u00e9 ce projet.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">M. Northrup est aujourd&#039;hui b\u00e9n\u00e9vole au Mus\u00e9e naval de Halifax. Jim et son camarade et\nancien sous-marinier, le Pm 2 (retrait\u00e9) Brian Lapierre, ont particip\u00e9 \u00e0 la conception et \u00e0 la\nconstruction de la salle des sous-marins du mus\u00e9e, avec l&#039;aide d&#039;autres personnes.
