Une histoire unique de la Seconde Guerre mondiale sur la c\u00f4te sud de la Nouvelle-\u00c9cosse peut maintenant \u00eatre explor\u00e9e en profondeur au Mus\u00e9e naval d'Halifax, avec la nouvelle exposition du mus\u00e9e intitul\u00e9e \u00ab Home Away from Home : Camp Norway \u00e0 Lunenburg \u00bb, qui ouvrira\nofficiellement ses portes le 29 novembre.<\/p>\n

Cette exposition est le fruit des efforts d\u00e9ploy\u00e9s par le personnel du mus\u00e9e pour raconter\nl'histoire des quelque 2 000 marins marchands norv\u00e9giens, principalement des baleiniers, qui\nsont arriv\u00e9s dans le bassin de Bedford au cours du printemps et de l'\u00e9t\u00e9 1940. Comme\nl'explique Jennifer Denty, directrice du mus\u00e9e, les Norv\u00e9giens poss\u00e9daient \u00e0 l'\u00e9poque l'une des\nplus grandes flottes marchandes du monde, et leur gouvernement en exil conseillait aux navires\nen mer de se diriger vers les ports alli\u00e9s plut\u00f4t que de retourner dans la Norv\u00e8ge occup\u00e9e par\nles nazis.<\/p>\n

\u00ab Le gouvernement collaborationniste a ordonn\u00e9 \u00e0 tous les navires norv\u00e9giens en mer de\nrentrer chez eux et, pour d\u00e9montrer le courage de la flotte marchande norv\u00e9gienne, aucun\nd'entre eux ne l'a fait \u00bb, a d\u00e9clar\u00e9 Denty.<\/p>\n

Leur arriv\u00e9e a conduit \u00e0 la cr\u00e9ation d'un centre d'entra\u00eenement militaire norv\u00e9gien connu sous le\nnom de \u00ab Camp Norway \u00bb \u00e0 Lunenburg, le site choisi par le gouvernement canadien, qui a\nouvert ses portes en novembre 1940. Plus de 1 200 marins ont \u00e9t\u00e9 form\u00e9s aux services de\nfonderie dans cet \u00e9tablissement, et de nombreux Norv\u00e9giens ont \u00e9galement trouv\u00e9 du travail dans les installations locales de r\u00e9paration navale, les usines de transformation du poisson, ou dans la sylviculture et l'agriculture de la r\u00e9gion. Le mus\u00e9e a accueilli des invit\u00e9s pour le vernissage de l'exposition, dont le lieutenant-\ngouverneur de la Nouvelle-\u00c9cosse, Arthur J. LeBlanc, et son \u00e9pouse Patsy LeBlanc, ainsi que\ndes repr\u00e9sentants de l'ambassade royale de Norv\u00e8ge \u00e0 Ottawa, qui ont soulign\u00e9 les liens entre\nles deux pays.<\/p>\n

The ties that were forged during the difficult war years left a lasting legacy and contributed to Norway and Canada’s closely shared output on international peace and security,\u201d said Norwegian First Secretary Sofia Tesfaghiorghis.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe sailors must have missed Norway and those they left behind, and I’m sure they found comfort in this peaceful and beautiful landscape, which in many ways resembles Norway. It is easy to understand why the Norwegian sailors and soldiers perceived Lunenburg as a home away from home,\u201d Tesfaghiorghis added.<\/p>\n

Outre les objets expos\u00e9s provenant de sa propre collection, le mus\u00e9e naval a remerci\u00e9 le\nmus\u00e9e de la p\u00eache de l'Atlantique de Lunenburg, ainsi que la fondation Convoy Cup, d'avoir\npr\u00eat\u00e9 des objets et des souvenirs.
