LE MAT 1 BRYAN UNDERWOOD<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\" translation-block\">L&#039;actuel commandant des Forces maritimes de l&#039;Atlantique s&#039;est joint \u00e0 la Marine royale du\nCanada en 1988, pr\u00e8s de 20 ans apr\u00e8s l&#039;explosion en mer survenue \u00e0 bord du NCSM Kootenay\nle 23 octobre 1969. Comme tous les marins canadiens, la contre-amiral Jos\u00e9e Kurtz dit avoir\nappris ce tragique incident, ainsi que les nombreuses le\u00e7ons tir\u00e9es de la lutte contre les\nincendies et du contr\u00f4le des dommages, au cours de sa formation.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ce n&#039;est toutefois que plus tard dans sa carri\u00e8re qu&#039;elle a commenc\u00e9 \u00e0 comprendre toutes les\ncons\u00e9quences de l&#039;explosion, y compris l&#039;impact \u00e0 long terme sur l&#039;\u00e9quipage du navire.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00ab J&#039;ai eu la chance de parler avec des gens qui \u00e9taient l\u00e0 et d&#039;entendre leur histoire, de\ncomprendre la douleur et l&#039;impact personnel qui sont encore vifs aujourd&#039;hui pour les survivants\net leurs familles \u00bb, a d\u00e9clar\u00e9 la Cam Kurtz, lors de la c\u00e9r\u00e9monie de comm\u00e9moration marquant\nles 54 ans de la catastrophe.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\" translation-block\">Le 23 octobre 1969, peu apr\u00e8s 8 heures du matin, le NCSM Kootenay, qui fait partie d&#039;une force\nop\u00e9rationnelle canadienne, subit une explosion catastrophique dans sa bo\u00eete de vitesses tribord\nau cours d&#039;un essai de routine \u00e0 pleine puissance au large de Plymouth, au Royaume-Uni.\nCaus\u00e9 par une installation d\u00e9fectueuse, l&#039;incendie et la fum\u00e9e toxique qui en ont r\u00e9sult\u00e9 ont\nco\u00fbt\u00e9 la vie \u00e0 9 personnes et bless\u00e9 53 autres membres de l&#039;\u00e9quipage du navire. Malgr\u00e9 des\nressources limit\u00e9es, les membres de l&#039;\u00e9quipage ont organis\u00e9 une op\u00e9ration audacieuse de\nsauvetage et de lutte contre l&#039;incendie. Le navire a \u00e9t\u00e9 gravement endommag\u00e9, mais il est rest\u00e9\n\u00e0 flot.<\/p>\n<p class=\" translation-block\">Cette ann\u00e9e, la comm\u00e9moration a eu lieu au M\u00e9morial des marins canadiens du temps de paix,\no\u00f9 les noms des marins du Kootenay disparus figurent parmi les noms \u00e9num\u00e9r\u00e9s. Patti Christie, fille de feu le M 2 Robert Christie, a \u00e9t\u00e9 particuli\u00e8rement f\u00e9licit\u00e9e pour ses\nefforts visant \u00e0 pr\u00e9server l&#039;h\u00e9ritage du NCSM Kootenay au cours des derni\u00e8res ann\u00e9es en tant que\nmembre actif de la \u00ab famille Kootenay \u00bb, tandis que le matelot de 1re classe (retrait\u00e9) Allan &quot;Dinger&quot;\nBell a \u00e9galement \u00e9t\u00e9 f\u00e9licit\u00e9 pour ses nombreuses ann\u00e9es d&#039;efforts visant \u00e0 obtenir pour ses\ncompagnons de bord une reconnaissance appropri\u00e9e de leurs actions.<\/p>\n<p class=\" translation-block\">Une partie de ce travail s&#039;est concr\u00e9tis\u00e9e lorsque la MRC a marqu\u00e9 le 50e anniversaire de\nl&#039;explosion en 2019 - l&#039;\u00e9quipage du navire Kootenay a re\u00e7u la Mention \u00e9logieuse d&#039;unit\u00e9 de la MRC\npour sa bravoure, son h\u00e9ro\u00efsme et son professionnalisme ce jour-l\u00e0. La pr\u00e9sentation a \u00e9t\u00e9 d\u00e9crite\ncomme une \u00e9tape tardive mais tr\u00e8s importante dans la reconnaissance de l&#039;incident, du travail de\nl&#039;\u00e9quipage et de l&#039;impact durable sur leurs vies et leurs familles. De nombreux survivants du\nKootenay ont d\u00fb faire face \u00e0 des probl\u00e8mes de sant\u00e9 physique et mentale apr\u00e8s l&#039;accident, certains\n\nayant souffert de troubles de stress post-traumatique pendant des d\u00e9cennies avant de recevoir une\naide professionnelle.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pattie Christie raconte que son p\u00e8re \u00e9tait l&#039;un d&#039;entre eux, ce qui l&#039;a \u00e9loign\u00e9e de sa famille pendant\ndes d\u00e9cennies. Ils se sont retrouv\u00e9s en 2003 et, apr\u00e8s la mort de son p\u00e8re en 2006, elle a trouv\u00e9 du\nr\u00e9confort en entrant en contact avec ses anciens compagnons de bord.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00ab Je suis tr\u00e8s reconnaissante de faire partie de cette famille aujourd&#039;hui, et le fait d&#039;entendre leurs\nr\u00e9cits, y compris les r\u00e9cits positifs sur mon p\u00e8re, m&#039;a aid\u00e9e \u00e0 me sentir plus proche de lui \u00bb, dit-elle.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\" translation-block\">La comm\u00e9moration a \u00e9galement mis en lumi\u00e8re le r\u00f4le du Centre de formation au contr\u00f4le des\navaries de Kootenay de la MRC.
