Le 8 septembre 2023, le navire canadien de Sa Majest\u00e9 (NCSM) Oriole a travers\u00e9 le canal\nWelland, qui relie le lac Ontario au lac \u00c9ri\u00e9, dans le cadre de la Tourn\u00e9e annuelle dans les Grands Lacs de la Marine royale canadienne (MRC). Le canal Welland compte huit \u00e9cluses, qui permettent aux navires de monter et de descendre d\u2019environ 100 m\u00e8tres entre les niveaux d\u2019eau du lac Ontario et du lac \u00c9ri\u00e9. Il a \u00e9t\u00e9 construit \u00e0 l\u2019origine en 1829 pour permettre aux navires de contourner les chutes Niagara en toute s\u00e9curit\u00e9.<\/p>\n

L\u2019\u00e9quipage du NCSM Oriole a pris plus de douze heures pour traverser le canal Welland, une op\u00e9ration qui a dur\u00e9 toute la journ\u00e9e. Pendant ce passage, des \u00ab cargos hors mer \u00bb (navires qui ne se d\u00e9placent qu\u2019entre les Grands Lacs) et d\u2019autres \u00ab navires oc\u00e9aniques \u00bb (navires de haute mer) sont pass\u00e9s, et leur taille \u00e9clipsait celle du NCSM Oriole, qui mesure 31,1 m (102 pi de long et 31,1 m (102 pi) de haut (hauteur du grand m\u00e2t). \u00ab La travers\u00e9e du canal Welland a \u00e9t\u00e9 une exp\u00e9rience extraordinaire \u00bb,\nd\u00e9clare le capitaine de corvette (Capc) Gregg Morris, nouveau commandant du NCSM Oriole. Le commandant actuel du NCSM Oriole, le capitaine de corvette Robert Pelton, lui a confi\u00e9 le contr\u00f4le des mouvements du navire tout au long de la travers\u00e9e du canal Welland, \u00ab tout le monde a eu un r\u00f4le \u00e0 jouer et tout l\u2019\u00e9quipage du navire a d\u00fb travailler en \u00e9quipe pour mener \u00e0 bien cette mission. Je suis incroyablement fier du travail accompli par l\u2019ensemble de l\u2019\u00e9quipe tout au long de la travers\u00e9e. \u00bb<\/p>\n

Le NCSM Oriole participe \u00e0 la Tourn\u00e9e des Grands Lacs (TGL) 2023. La TGL est un d\u00e9ploiement annuel, qui permet \u00e0 la MRC de se rapprocher des Canadiens vivant dans les zones non c\u00f4ti\u00e8res, qui n\u2019ont habituellement pas acc\u00e8s au personnel et aux op\u00e9rations de la Marine. Cette occasion permet aux Canadiens de s\u2019entretenir avec les marins et les recruteurs afin d\u2019en apprendre davantage sur les carri\u00e8res offertes dans la MRC. De plus, la TGL est un moyen d\u2019\u00e9veiller l\u2019int\u00e9r\u00eat \u00e0 la vie maritime et au service en mer, gr\u00e2ce \u00e0 des visites de navires, \u00e0 des activit\u00e9s de sensibilisation et \u00e0 une pr\u00e9sence dans les communaut\u00e9s canadiennes.<\/p>\n

Le NCSM <\/span>Oriole<\/span><\/i> a maintenant repris sa route sur le lac Ontario et poursuit sa Tourn\u00e9e des Grands Lacs. Il visitera de nombreux ports c\u00f4tiers en Ontario, au Qu\u00e9bec et dans les provinces de l\u2019est du Canada avant de retourner \u00e0 la Base des Forces canadiennes (BFC) Halifax au d\u00e9but d\u2019octobre.
