Le lieutenant-colonel (retrait\u00e9) Shawn Williamson apporte un canif suisse rouge partout o\u00f9 il va.<\/span><\/p>\n

Les mots \u00ab Swissair \u00bb et \u00ab Merci \u00bb figurent respectivement au recto et au verso.<\/span><\/p>\n

Il s\u2019agit d\u2019un cadeau de la compagnie a\u00e9rienne. Elle a offert ce petit t\u00e9moignage de reconnaissance aux personnes qui ont particip\u00e9 aux efforts de r\u00e9cup\u00e9ration apr\u00e8s l\u2019accident du vol 111 de Swissair.<\/span><\/p>\n

Pendant son service, Shawn \u00e9tait un instructeur de vol pour les h\u00e9licopt\u00e8res Sea King et op\u00e9rateur de syst\u00e8mes de combat a\u00e9rien \u00e0 la retraite qui a effectu\u00e9 des vols pendant 32 ans sur les deux c\u00f4tes canadiennes. Il a aussi \u00e9t\u00e9 l\u2019une des premi\u00e8res personnes \u00e0 voir l\u2019\u00e9pave de l\u2019avion lorsque le soleil s\u2019est lev\u00e9 sur Peggy\u2019s Cove le matin apr\u00e8s l\u2019\u00e9crasement dans l\u2019oc\u00e9an de l\u2019avion de ligne, \u00e0 22 h 31 le 2 septembre 1998, avion qui transportait 229 personnes.<\/span><\/p>\n

Il \u00e9tait bas\u00e9 au 406e Escadron Shearwater lorsqu\u2019il a re\u00e7u l\u2019appel, \u00e0 minuit, indiquant qu\u2019un avion de ligne commercial s\u2019\u00e9tait peut-\u00eatre \u00e9cras\u00e9. Il \u00e9tait \u00e0 la base a\u00e9rienne \u00e0 3 h et dans son h\u00e9licopt\u00e8re \u00e0 5 h.<\/span><\/p>\n

Ce matin-l\u00e0, lui et les quatre membres de son \u00e9quipage ont senti l\u2019odeur pr\u00e9sente sur le site de l\u2019\u00e9crasement avant de constater ce dernier. Cette forte odeur provenait du carbur\u00e9acteur que les pilotes avaient essay\u00e9 de d\u00e9verser au-dessus de l\u2019oc\u00e9an dans l\u2019espoir de r\u00e9ussir un atterrissage d\u2019urgence \u00e0 l\u2019a\u00e9roport international d\u2019Halifax. Aux premi\u00e8res lueurs du jour, leur Sea King a perc\u00e9 une \u00e9paisse couche de brume et de brouillard, le laissant voir l\u2019un des premiers aper\u00e7us a\u00e9riens du vaste et triste champ de d\u00e9bris. \u00ab Nous ne savions pas ce que nous allions voir \u00bb, se rappelle-t-il.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00ab J\u2019\u00e9tais stup\u00e9fait par la d\u00e9vastation. Nous avons commenc\u00e9 \u00e0 fouiller le champ de d\u00e9bris, \u00e0 la recherche de personnes. Il est rapidement devenu \u00e9vident qu\u2019il ne s\u2019agissait pas d\u2019une mission de recherche et de sauvetage, mais d\u2019une mission de r\u00e9cup\u00e9ration. \u00bb<\/span><\/p>\n

Il se souvient de feuilles de papier, des centaines et des centaines de feuilles qui flottaient parmi de nombreux morceaux de l\u2019avion, des effets personnels et des restes humains.<\/span><\/p>\n

Son \u00e9quipe et lui ont utilis\u00e9 un d\u00e9tecteur d\u2019anomalies magn\u00e9tiques pour chercher le m\u00e9tal sous l\u2019eau. L\u2019objectif \u00e9tait de localiser les plus gros morceaux de l\u2019\u00e9pave, mais c\u2019\u00e9tait impossible \u00e0 ce stade. Pendant que Shawn dirigeait, le pilote a abaiss\u00e9 l\u2019h\u00e9licopt\u00e8re \u00e0 un vol stationnaire de 40 pieds et deux op\u00e9rateurs sonar sont descendus dans l\u2019\u00e9pave \u00e0 l\u2019aide d\u2019un c\u00e2ble de sauvetage de 100 pieds. Lorsque les deux hommes ont \u00e9t\u00e9 ramen\u00e9s \u00e0 l\u2019h\u00e9licopt\u00e8re, leurs v\u00eatements \u00e9taient imbib\u00e9s de carbur\u00e9acteur et ils avaient ramass\u00e9 l\u2019une des roues de l\u2019avion et quelques si\u00e8ges.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00ab Nous avons appel\u00e9 la Division des op\u00e9rations. Nous leur avons dit que nous avions des pi\u00e8ces de l\u2019avion, de l\u2019ADN et des restes humains \u00e0 bord \u00bb, a-t-il d\u00e9clar\u00e9. \u00c0 bord, le Lcol Williamson et l\u2019\u00e9quipage n\u2019ont cess\u00e9 de se parler pour s\u2019assurer qu\u2019ils allaient bien. \u00ab Cette situation et la conscience de l\u2019ampleur de l\u2019accident, de la d\u00e9vastation, de la perte de vies humaines, il aurait \u00e9t\u00e9 facile de commencer \u00e0 ne pas bien aller pendant le vol \u00bb, se rappelle-t-il.<\/span><\/p>\n

Ils ont atterri dans un carrefour d\u2019activit\u00e9s \u00e0 Shearwater et ont re\u00e7u l\u2019ordre de mettre ce qu\u2019ils avaient trouv\u00e9 dans des sacs en plastique transparents \u00e0 l\u2019int\u00e9rieur d\u2019un camion r\u00e9frig\u00e9r\u00e9. Toute la nuit, des p\u00eacheurs locaux et des \u00e9quipages de navires militaires ont rapport\u00e9 des restes. \u00ab Le camion r\u00e9frig\u00e9r\u00e9 \u00e9tait d\u00e9j\u00e0 plein \u00bb, a-t-il d\u00e9clar\u00e9.<\/span><\/p>\n

Au cours des huit semaines suivantes, 228 \u00e9chantillons d\u2019ADN ont \u00e9t\u00e9 identifi\u00e9s avec certitude gr\u00e2ce \u00e0 la reconnaissance de caract\u00e9ristiques connues, aux dossiers dentaires et \u00e0 la v\u00e9rification de l\u2019ADN. Il y avait une paire de jumeaux identiques \u00e0 bord, ce qui explique pourquoi seules 228 des 229 victimes ont \u00e9t\u00e9 identifi\u00e9es gr\u00e2ce \u00e0 l\u2019ADN.<\/span><\/p>\n

Le personnel responsable de la gestion du stress d\u00fb \u00e0 un incident critique \u00e9tait pr\u00e9sent \u00e0 Shearwater d\u00e8s le premier matin, apportant son soutien \u00e0 toutes les personnes impliqu\u00e9es dans le processus extr\u00eamement difficile de r\u00e9cup\u00e9ration et d\u2019identification. \u00ab Le personnel est arriv\u00e9 d\u00e8s le d\u00e9but et toutes les personnes ayant particip\u00e9 \u00e0 l\u2019op\u00e9ration Persistence ont eu la possibilit\u00e9 d\u2019\u00eatre soutenues \u00bb, a mentionn\u00e9 le Lcol Williamson.<\/span><\/p>\n
