Le lieutenant de vaisseau Chris Quigley, originaire d'Augustine Cove (\u00cele-du-Prince-\u00c9douard), est le chef du d\u00e9partement de g\u00e9nie des syst\u00e8mes maritimes \u00e0 bord du navire canadien de Sa Majest\u00e9 (NCSM) Montr\u00e9al. Le d\u00e9partement comprend environ 55 personnes qui sont responsables de la propulsion, de l'\u00e9lectricit\u00e9, des moteurs auxiliaires et du moteur principal du navire ou, comme Chris le d\u00e9crit, il aide \u00e0 s'assurer que \u00ab le bateau flotte et se d\u00e9place. \u00bb En tant que l'un des deux officiers de l'un des plus grands d\u00e9partements, Chris se retrouve souvent noy\u00e9 dans la paperasse administrative, mais il se tient \u00e9galement occup\u00e9 en tant que principal point de contact pour toutes les activit\u00e9s de contr\u00f4le des dommages et de lutte contre l'incendie qui pourraient devoir avoir lieu sur le navire - ce \u00e0 quoi l'\u00e9quipage se pr\u00e9pare sans rel\u00e2che en effectuant des exercices et des entra\u00eenements.<\/p>\n

Chris s'est engag\u00e9 dans les Forces arm\u00e9es canadiennes en 2004 en tant que commis et a commenc\u00e9 sa carri\u00e8re au NCSM Queen Charlotte dans la r\u00e9serve navale. Son plan initial \u00e9tait de s'enr\u00f4ler, de suivre une formation r\u00e9mun\u00e9r\u00e9e en math\u00e9matiques, de faire un camp d'entra\u00eenement et de quitter l'arm\u00e9e pour devenir enseignant. Mais l'attrait de la mer \u00e9tait irr\u00e9sistible, et la solde de matelot de 1re classe - l'\u00e9quivalent du caporal de l'arm\u00e9e de terre dans la Marine royale canadienne - \u00e9tait trop \u00e9lev\u00e9e pour qu'il fasse ce changement. Au lieu de cela, il a mis \u00e0 profit son dipl\u00f4me en math\u00e9matiques pour devenir officier de renseignement naval, puis officier m\u00e9canicien.<\/p>\n

Au cours des trois derniers mois, Chris et son \u00e9quipe ont fait en sorte que le NCSM Montr\u00e9al \u00ab flotte et se d\u00e9place \u00bb dans des endroits comme Lisbonne, Singapour et Okinawa, \u00e0 l'appui de l'op\u00e9ration Projection - la contribution de la MRC \u00e0 la s\u00e9curit\u00e9 et \u00e0 la stabilit\u00e9 dans la r\u00e9gion indo-pacifique. \u00ab Cette mission de chef de service est l'apog\u00e9e de ma carri\u00e8re jusqu'\u00e0 pr\u00e9sent \u00bb, a-t-il d\u00e9clar\u00e9, \u00ab j'en tire une grande fiert\u00e9. \u00bb Mais il ajoute que mettre le navire en \u00e9tat de naviguer et le pr\u00e9parer \u00e0 partir \u00e0 l'autre bout du monde repr\u00e9sente \u00ab une somme de travail consid\u00e9rable. \u00bb Entre le d\u00e9ploiement proprement dit et la direction de toutes les r\u00e9parations \u00e0 terre avant le d\u00e9part, Chris ressent la pression d'un long d\u00e9ploiement. Pendant son s\u00e9jour en mer, il f\u00eatera au total quatre anniversaires familiaux, dont le sien.<\/p>\n

Mais il y a aussi beaucoup de points positifs, selon Chris. \u00ab Je re\u00e7ois tellement moins de courriels ici ! Et je dors beaucoup plus que chez moi. Cela me permet d'\u00eatre beaucoup plus concentr\u00e9. \u00bb Et par \u00ab concentr\u00e9 \u00bb, il entend qu'il dispose d'une plus grande marge de man\u0153uvre pour encadrer les jeunes membres de son service, et de plus de temps pour s'entra\u00eener et se pr\u00e9parer aux situations d'urgence - un domaine que chaque membre de son service doit ma\u00eetriser avant d'obtenir sa prochaine promotion.<\/p>\n

Avec pr\u00e8s de 20 ans de service, Chris envisage maintenant de prendre sa retraite dans les prochaines ann\u00e9es, ce qui lui donne de grandes ambitions. L'\u00e9t\u00e9, il souhaite travailler sur un terrain de golf pour ramasser les balles perdues et l'hiver, il veut \u00eatre chauffeur de Zamboni \u00ab \u00e0 la patinoire. \u00bb En r\u00e9alit\u00e9, admet-il rapidement, j'aimerais travailler dans l'administration technique au minist\u00e8re de la D\u00e9fense nationale, un poste \u00e0 l'arsenal maritime d'Halifax qui accueille fr\u00e9quemment d'anciens membres de la MRC.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
