En tant que civil n\u2019ayant aucune connaissance de la fonction d\u2019employ\u00e9 de quart, il est difficile d\u2019exprimer en mots l\u2019exp\u00e9rience que l\u2019on vit en entrant pour la premi\u00e8re fois dans le centre du quart de la section des communications navales de la Base des Forces canadiennes (BFC) Halifax. C\u2019est un endroit occup\u00e9. Il se trouve derri\u00e8re de lourdes portes de haute s\u00e9curit\u00e9. On y trouve de l\u2019\u00e9quipement hautement technique. Et au milieu de cette intensit\u00e9 palpable, son personnel de quart travaille dur pour fournir un soutien en mati\u00e8re de communications pour les op\u00e9rations de d\u00e9ploiement de l\u2019Organisation du trait\u00e9 de l\u2019Atlantique Nord (OTAN).<\/p>\n

Le personnel de quart fournit des services de messagerie \u00e0 destination et en provenance des navires, sous-marins, a\u00e9ronefs et unit\u00e9s \u00e0 terre de l\u2019OTAN d\u00e9ploy\u00e9s, 24 heures sur 24 et 7 jours sur 7. Ils servent d\u2019interm\u00e9diaires entre la Flotte de la c\u00f4te Est du Canada et les d\u00e9ploiements afin de soutenir les op\u00e9rations militaires et d\u2019assurer la s\u00e9curit\u00e9 des membres de l\u2019\u00c9quipe de la D\u00e9fense.<\/p>\n

\u00ab Le personnel de quart est l\u2019\u00e9pine dorsale des op\u00e9rations militaires en mati\u00e8re de communication, a expliqu\u00e9 le matelot-chef Boyde Langdon, communicateur naval qui travaille comme personne de quart \u00e0 la BFC Halifax. Nous sommes au courant de toutes les communications en provenance et \u00e0 destination de la terre et de la mer. Il nous incombe, en tant que personnes de quart, de veiller \u00e0 ce que les messages parviennent au bon endroit, sans erreur. \u00bb<\/p>\n

Le personnel de quart utilise les communications par satellite, la radiot\u00e9l\u00e9phonie \u00e0 haute fr\u00e9quence, la radio \u00e0 basse fr\u00e9quence et d\u2019autres technologies de communication pour assurer une communication constante avec les op\u00e9rations militaires. Ils doivent s\u2019assurer que toutes les lignes de communication, y compris les lignes de secours, sont disponibles \u00e0 tout moment en cas d\u2019urgence.<\/p>\n

\u00ab Il est agr\u00e9able de venir travailler et de sentir que l\u2019on a besoin de son expertise, a d\u00e9clar\u00e9 le Matc Langdon. Bien que nous soyons derri\u00e8re des portes closes et que nous ne soyons pas toujours vus par le public ou d\u2019autres unit\u00e9s, notre travail est crucial pour le succ\u00e8s des op\u00e9rations militaires. \u00bb<\/p>\n

Le personnel de quart est disponible 24 heures sur 24, 7 jours sur 7, pour appuyer les op\u00e9rations de d\u00e9ploiement dans le domaine maritime, y compris les navires de la Marine royale canadienne, ses a\u00e9ronefs embarqu\u00e9s de l\u2019Aviation royale canadienne (ARC) et les ressources de recherche et sauvetage applicables de l\u2019ARC dans la r\u00e9gion de l\u2019Atlantique. Ces personnes travaillent par quarts de 12 heures, car ce service est requis en permanence. Mais malgr\u00e9 les longues heures de travail, le personnel de quart comprend que son travail est crucial et reste concentr\u00e9 sur la t\u00e2che \u00e0 accomplir lorsqu\u2019il est dans le centre du quart. \u00ab Ce que je pr\u00e9f\u00e8re dans le m\u00e9tier d\u2019employ\u00e9 de quart, c\u2019est la conciliation de la vie professionnelle et de la vie priv\u00e9e, a expliqu\u00e9 le matelot de premi\u00e8re classe (Mat 1) Keisha Abbott, communicatrice navale qui travaille au centre du quart de la section des communications navales. Je connais mon emploi du temps environ un an \u00e0 l\u2019avance, ce qui me permet de planifier facilement des activit\u00e9s en dehors du travail. Ce n\u2019est pas courant pour d\u2019autres m\u00e9tiers militaires. \u00bb<\/p>\n

Entre les quarts de travail et pendant les temps d\u2019arr\u00eat, la Mat 1 Abbott a eu l\u2019occasion de s\u2019adonner \u00e0 d\u2019autres int\u00e9r\u00eats et \u00e0 des \u00e9tudes ind\u00e9pendantes. Elle a suivi des cours de langue des signes am\u00e9ricaine (ASL) pour devenir une communicatrice plus efficace et travaille \u00e0 l\u2019obtention d\u2019un dipl\u00f4me en blessures associ\u00e9es au sport.<\/p>\n

\u00ab Je recommanderais le m\u00e9tier de communicateur naval \u00e0 toute personne d\u00e9sireuse de relever un d\u00e9fi, a d\u00e9clar\u00e9 la Mat 1 Abbott.
