Alors qu'il s'adressait \u00e0 la foule rassembl\u00e9e pour la c\u00e9r\u00e9monie de comm\u00e9moration de la bataille de l'Atlantique le 7 mai \u00e0 Chester, en Nouvelle-\u00c9cosse, le Capitaine de corvette Ron Hearnshaw a d\u00e9clar\u00e9 qu'il se devait de souligner le r\u00f4le essentiel que les marins citoyens de la R\u00e9serve des volontaires de la Marine royale du Canada ont jou\u00e9 tout au long de cette campagne qui a dur\u00e9 six ans.<\/p>\n

LE NCSM SCOTIAN<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

La MRC est pass\u00e9e de moins de 4 000 marins \u00e0 plus de 95 000 \u00e0 la fin de la Seconde Guerre mondiale, la majorit\u00e9 d'entre eux ayant \u00e9t\u00e9 recrut\u00e9s par les divisions de la r\u00e9serve navale \u00e9tablies dans tout le pays. La marine canadienne a jou\u00e9 un r\u00f4le essentiel dans la victoire dans l'Atlantique et dans la guerre en g\u00e9n\u00e9ral, en permettant \u00e0 la Grande-Bretagne de rester en contact avec ses alli\u00e9s et de maintenir une ligne de ravitaillement vitale par les voies maritimes. La responsabilit\u00e9 navale du Canada dans la protection du commerce de l'Atlantique Nord contre les sous-marins allemands a \u00e9tabli son r\u00f4le au sein d'une alliance plus large. Par la suite, la Marine royale canadienne (MRC) a \u00e9t\u00e9 reconnue comme l'une des forces navales anti-sous-marines les plus efficaces au monde apr\u00e8s 1945.<\/p>\n

\u00ab Sur les 2 170 membres du personnel de la Marine canadienne qui ont p\u00e9ri au cours de la bataille, la majorit\u00e9 - 1 769 - \u00e9taient des r\u00e9servistes navals. Souvenons-nous du sacrifice des hommes et des femmes courageux qui ont particip\u00e9 \u00e0 la bataille de l'Atlantique, et n'oublions jamais le r\u00f4le important jou\u00e9 par la R\u00e9serve navale et les marins citoyens \u00bb, a d\u00e9clar\u00e9 le Capc Hearnshaw, commandant int\u00e9rimaire du Scotian.<\/p>\n

Scotian a \u00e9t\u00e9 invit\u00e9e \u00e0 diriger la c\u00e9r\u00e9monie cette ann\u00e9e par la filiale no 44 Chester de la L\u00e9gion royale canadienne, alors que la R\u00e9serve navale continue de c\u00e9l\u00e9brer son 100e anniversaire. Le Capc Hearnshaw a remerci\u00e9 le pr\u00e9sident de la section, Gerry MacNeil, et la municipalit\u00e9 de Chester de lui avoir donn\u00e9 l'occasion de mettre en valeur les r\u00e9servistes au cours de l'ann\u00e9e de leur centenaire.<\/p>\n

Des centaines de personnes ont assist\u00e9 \u00e0 la c\u00e9r\u00e9monie de cette ann\u00e9e au M\u00e9morial d'Halifax, qui comprenait un d\u00e9fil\u00e9 a\u00e9rien de l'ARC et la pr\u00e9sence de la corvette de la Seconde Guerre mondiale NCSM Sackville dans l'eau au large du parc Point Pleasant, o\u00f9 elle a proc\u00e9d\u00e9 \u00e0 une c\u00e9r\u00e9monie de remise des cendres. Le Cam Brian Santarpia, commandant des FMAR(A) et de la FOIA, a choisi de mettre l'accent sur la marine marchande du Canada \u00e0 l'occasion de cette journ\u00e9e. En effet, 1 600 marins marchands sont morts en mer au cours de la bataille.<\/p>\n

\u00ab La grande majorit\u00e9 des marins marchands qui ont navigu\u00e9 dans la marine marchande du Canada venaient du nord d'Halifax, et leur nombre de morts a \u00e9t\u00e9 effroyable \u00bb, a-t-il d\u00e9clar\u00e9, ajoutant que les efforts combin\u00e9s de la RVMRC et de la marine marchande ont cr\u00e9\u00e9 un h\u00e9ritage stup\u00e9fiant de bravoure et de sacrifice.<\/p>\n
