La Marine royale canadienne a officiellement baptis\u00e9 son nouveau navire de patrouille extrac\u00f4tier et arctique, le futur NCSM William Hall, tout en honorant l'h\u00e9ritage de son homonyme, lors d'une c\u00e9r\u00e9monie qui s'est d\u00e9roul\u00e9e \u00e0 Halifax le 28 avril.<\/span><\/p>\n

Une foule nombreuse s'est rassembl\u00e9e aux installations d'Irving Shipbuilding \u00e0 Halifax pour l'occasion, y compris des repr\u00e9sentants des gouvernements f\u00e9d\u00e9ral et provinciaux, des constructeurs navals, des coll\u00e8gues de la Marine et du MDN, les futurs membres de l'\u00e9quipage du nouveau navire et les descendants du quartier-ma\u00eetre William Hall lui-m\u00eame. Gibson a pris part au c\u00e9r\u00e9monial de la c\u00e9r\u00e9monie de bapt\u00eame, qui consiste \u00e0 briser une bouteille de champagne sur la proue d'un nouveau navire, en guise de toast et pour porter chance au navire et \u00e0 son \u00e9quipage.<\/span><\/p>\n

Le ma\u00eetre William Hall, VC (1827-1904) est comm\u00e9mor\u00e9 pour ses actes h\u00e9ro\u00efques en tant que membre de l'\u00e9quipage du navire de la Royal Navy HMS Shannon lors du secours de Lucknow en 1857. Il a fait preuve de bravoure sous le feu et a \u00e9t\u00e9 l'un des deux seuls membres de sa brigade navale \u00e0 avoir surv\u00e9cu \u00e0 la bataille.<\/p>\n

S'exprimant \u00e0 cette occasion, le ministre de la d\u00e9fense nationale, Anita Anand, a rappel\u00e9 que Hall \u00e9tait le fils d'esclaves am\u00e9ricains affranchis et qu'il avait travaill\u00e9 dans les chantiers navals de la vall\u00e9e d'Annapolis avant de devenir marin marchand et de s'enr\u00f4ler dans la Royal Navy en 1852. \u00ab Hall a surmont\u00e9 des obstacles pour servir son pays, et pour son service, il a re\u00e7u la Croix de Victoria. Il est le premier Canadien noir, le premier marin canadien et le premier N\u00e9o-\u00c9cossais \u00e0 recevoir cette prestigieuse m\u00e9daille \u00bb, a-t-elle d\u00e9clar\u00e9.<\/span><\/p>\n

Malgr\u00e9 ses actes h\u00e9ro\u00efques, William Hall a \u00e9t\u00e9 enterr\u00e9 en 1904 dans une tombe anonyme, sans honneurs militaires, et son histoire n'a \u00e9t\u00e9 connue que des d\u00e9cennies apr\u00e8s sa mort, a ajout\u00e9 Anand.<\/span>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00ab Aujourd'hui, c'est l'occasion de donner au quartier-ma\u00eetre Hall la gratitude et la reconnaissance qu'il m\u00e9ritait il y a tant d'ann\u00e9es.<\/span><\/p>\n

Le vice-amiral Angus Topshee, commandant de la MRC, a expliqu\u00e9 que ses pr\u00e9d\u00e9cesseurs avaient d\u00e9cid\u00e9 de rompre avec la tradition en donnant \u00e0 la nouvelle classe de navires Harry-DeWolf le nom de h\u00e9ros de la marine canadienne. Il s'est dit reconnaissant d'avoir eu l'occasion de partager un moment historique avec les nombreux descendants de William Hall qui \u00e9taient pr\u00e9sents.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00ab Nous promettons que l'\u00e9quipage qui exploitera ce navire fera de son mieux pour \u00eatre \u00e0 la hauteur de l'h\u00e9ritage de votre anc\u00eatre, car je ne vois pas de meilleure fa\u00e7on d'honorer sa m\u00e9moire \u00bb, a d\u00e9clar\u00e9 le Vam Topshee.<\/span><\/p>\n

Il a \u00e9galement parl\u00e9 du projet NPEA et de la strat\u00e9gie nationale de construction navale en g\u00e9n\u00e9ral, ainsi que de l'importance de la nouvelle flotte de navires canadiens enti\u00e8rement construits dans le pays. Il s'agit d'une entreprise de grande envergure que seul un grand \u00c9tat-nation comme le Canada peut entreprendre, a d\u00e9clar\u00e9 le Vam Topshee, soulignant la nature complexe des constructions et la main-d'\u0153uvre qualifi\u00e9e requise.<\/span>

\u00ab La taille du William Hall derri\u00e8re nous ne suffit pas pour appr\u00e9cier la complexit\u00e9 r\u00e9elle de tous les diff\u00e9rents syst\u00e8mes \u00e0 l'int\u00e9rieur de ce navire, et plus important encore, les excellents marins et la formation et l'exp\u00e9rience dont ils ont besoin pour le faire fonctionner en soutien au Canada. \u00bb<\/span><\/p>\n

Le futur NCSM William Hall est le quatri\u00e8me des six navires de patrouille extrac\u00f4tiers et arctiques construits pour la MRC. Il sera suivi du futur NCSM Fr\u00e9d\u00e9rick Rolette et du futur NCSM Robert Hampton Gray. On s'attend \u00e0 ce que les six NPEA soient en possession de la Marine royale canadienne d'ici 2025.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

La foule pr\u00e9sente \u00e0 la c\u00e9r\u00e9monie a \u00e9galement entendu le pr\u00e9sident d'Irving Shipbuilding, Dirk Lesko, qui s'est dit fier de l'avancement du programme NPEA, tout en envisageant le d\u00e9but de la construction des navires de combat de surface canadiens.
