Lorsque Ted Barris a commenc\u00e9 \u00e0 r\u00e9diger le dernier ouvrage de sa s\u00e9rie sur l'histoire militaire du Canada - cette fois-ci consacr\u00e9 \u00e0 la bataille de l'Atlantique - il savait qu'il n'avait pas pour objectif de faire un r\u00e9sum\u00e9 complet ou un compte rendu chronologique de la campagne.<\/span><\/p>\n

Comme il l'a fait pour ses autres livres, sur des sujets tels que la cr\u00eate de Vimy, le raid secret des Dam Busters de la RAF et le r\u00f4le du Canada dans la guerre de Cor\u00e9e, M. Barris s'est appuy\u00e9 sur son exp\u00e9rience de journaliste et d'animateur, tirant parti d'une carri\u00e8re de 50 ans d'interviews et de recherches, ainsi que de quelques nouvelles d\u00e9couvertes, pour pr\u00e9senter la plus longue action militaire de la Seconde Guerre mondiale \u00e0 travers les r\u00e9cits de ceux qui l'ont v\u00e9cue.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00ab J'essaie d'utiliser les voix et les r\u00e9flexions de ceux qui ont \u00e9t\u00e9 t\u00e9moins de la bataille de l'Atlantique pour donner vie \u00e0 ces histoires \u00bb, a-t-il d\u00e9clar\u00e9.<\/span><\/p>\n

Le livre, qui para\u00eetra \u00e0 l'automne 2022, s'intitule Battle of the Atlantic : Gauntlet to Victory, et Barris sera \u00e0 Halifax ce week-end pour donner deux apr\u00e8s-midi de pr\u00e9sentations bas\u00e9es sur son travail. Il prendra la parole au Mus\u00e9e naval d'Halifax le 5 mai et \u00e0 la Cambridge Military Library le 6 mai.<\/p>\n

La pr\u00e9sentation couvre l'essentiel, expliquant comment la Marine royale canadienne est pass\u00e9e de seulement 3 000 marins et 13 navires de guerre \u00e0 la quatri\u00e8me plus grande marine du monde \u00e0 la fin de la guerre, mais elle fournit un contexte \u00e0 travers les mots et les histoires des marins canadiens, des marins marchands et des membres des familles de ceux qui ont servi, avec des histoires d\u00e9crivant l'intensit\u00e9 de la bataille, mais aussi les impacts \u00e0 la maison. L'ouvrage de M. Bariss pr\u00e9sente \u00e9galement des r\u00e9cits d'adversaires, notamment l'\u00e9vasion d\u00e9chirante d'un sous-marin allemand d'un U-Boat coul\u00e9 dans la Manche.<\/span><\/p>\n

Il a ajout\u00e9 que le projet lui a permis de prendre conscience de l'importance strat\u00e9gique de la bataille de l'Atlantique, gr\u00e2ce \u00e0 un artefact qu'il a re\u00e7u d'un ami de l'est de l'Ontario au d\u00e9but du processus.<\/span><\/p>\n

Il a re\u00e7u des lettres \u00e9crites par une femme du nom d'Alix Masheter, une Canadienne qui s'est install\u00e9e en Angleterre juste avant la guerre, au sujet des r\u00e9alit\u00e9s du front int\u00e9rieur lorsque la guerre a commenc\u00e9 en 1939 - les coupures d'\u00e9lectricit\u00e9 nocturnes, le rationnement et les p\u00e9nuries \u00e0 venir de produits comme la nourriture ou le carburant dont les citoyens d\u00e9pendaient.<\/span>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n
