Les membres actuels et anciens du NCSM Scotian ont soulign\u00e9 le centenaire de la R\u00e9serve navale en grande pompe le 22 avril, en se joignant \u00e0 leurs coll\u00e8gues de la Marine royale du Canada et aux membres de la communaut\u00e9 \u00e9largie pour un d\u00eener de gala \u00e0 l'h\u00f4tel Westin Nova Scotian, \u00e0 Halifax.<\/p>\n
La soir\u00e9e a \u00e9t\u00e9 l'occasion de c\u00e9l\u00e9brer l'histoire et les r\u00e9alisations de la R\u00e9serve navale, mais le conf\u00e9rencier principal, le lieutenant de vaisseau (retrait\u00e9) Lennett Anderson, a \u00e9galement profit\u00e9 de l'occasion pour aborder des sujets plus difficiles lorsqu'il s'est adress\u00e9 aux anciens \u00e9l\u00e8ves de Scotian.<\/p>\n
Anderson, aujourd'hui pasteur principal de l'Emmanuel Baptist Church \u00e0 Hammonds Plains, s'est engag\u00e9 dans la R\u00e9serve navale en 1994, puis a \u00e9t\u00e9 promu au rang d'aum\u00f4nier de l'unit\u00e9 Scotian et de la r\u00e9gion de l'Atlantique.<\/p>\n
M\u00eame dans les ann\u00e9es 1990, a-t-il fait remarquer, il \u00e9tait rare de voir une personne noire dans un carr\u00e9 canadien, et Anderson s'est souvenu de la peine qu'il \u00e9prouvait \u00e0 recevoir des commentaires racistes de la part d'officiers sup\u00e9rieurs, ainsi que du silence de ses compagnons de bord. L'exp\u00e9rience v\u00e9cue au d\u00e9but de sa carri\u00e8re dans la marine l'a amen\u00e9 \u00e0 envisager de d\u00e9missionner, mais l'a conduit \u00e0 opter pour la r\u00e9silience.<\/span><\/p>\n
\u00ab J'ai d\u00fb me rendre compte que ma valeur ne diminuait pas en raison de l'incapacit\u00e9 de quelqu'un \u00e0 voir ma valeur. \u00bb<\/span><\/p>\n
Anderson a encourag\u00e9 ses coll\u00e8gues pr\u00e9sents dans la salle \u00e0 jouer un r\u00f4le de chef de file dans les efforts continus visant \u00e0 renouveler la culture de la Marine et des Forces arm\u00e9es canadiennes.<\/span><\/p>\n

Anderson a \u00e9galement soulign\u00e9 les nombreuses possibilit\u00e9s que lui a offertes sa carri\u00e8re dans la R\u00e9serve navale, l'influence militaire qui guide encore son minist\u00e8re aujourd'hui et les nombreuses relations durables qui sont n\u00e9es de son passage \u00e0 Scotian.<\/p>\nMembres de la R\u00e9serve navale, anciens et actuels, ainsi que des coll\u00e8gues de la MRC et des membres de la communaut\u00e9 se sont r\u00e9unis au Westin Nova Scotian pour l'occasion. \u00ab Je suis \u00e9ternellement reconnaissant des sages conseils, de l'exemple fid\u00e8le et du service sacrificiel d\u00e9vou\u00e9 que de nombreux membres de Scotian ont offert \u00e0 un jeune marin parmi eux. \u00bb<\/span><\/p>\n
Le contre-amiral Brian Santarpia, commandant des Forces maritimes de l'Atlantique et de la Force op\u00e9rationnelle interarm\u00e9es de l'Atlantique, a mis l'accent sur l'histoire en s'adressant \u00e0 l'auditoire. Il a d\u00e9crit la cr\u00e9ation de la R\u00e9serve des volontaires de la Marine royale du Canada en 1923 comme un moment crucial de l'histoire de la MRC, qui a permis de lutter contre la c\u00e9cit\u00e9 maritime du Canada.<\/span><\/p>\n
\u00ab \u00c0 peine 16 ans plus tard, lorsque le Canada est entr\u00e9 dans la Seconde Guerre mondiale, cette r\u00e9serve navale a \u00e9t\u00e9 \u00e0 l'origine de la cr\u00e9ation de la troisi\u00e8me plus grande marine du monde, avec plus de 100 000 officiers et marins provenant de tout le pays. \u00bb<\/span><\/p>\n
Le Capitaine de corvette Ron Hearnshaw, commandant par int\u00e9rim du Scotian pour l'occasion, a remerci\u00e9 la famille du Scotian et d'autres personnes pour leur pr\u00e9sence et leurs contributions aux c\u00e9l\u00e9brations du 100e anniversaire de la R\u00e9serve navale.
